Hang drying for a month???

Just to clarify, nothing, i repeat NOTHING except genetics determine the amount of resin produced by a plant.(there are arguements that UVB light will increase thc, but still no scientific evidence, not even a side by side trial) Its true that curing improves the taste and removes the chlorophyll, but to say that a good cure adds THC is misleading. prior to the drying process much of the resin is in the form of THC-A, decarboxylation is the process that takes place during drying that takes your fairly useless Thc-a and converts it into wonderful delta9THC.
I personally like to cure my buds for a few weeks, i do this to improve the taste, not because i'm under the impression its gonna make more resins. Lets all remember to do our homework and take everything we hear (including this, im just some guy on the internet) with a grain of salt.

What do you think about leaving the plant in the dark for 3 days before harvest? I'm on my first weed plant but have a lot of experience growing other things. I've been kicking that idea around after someone else said they do it (sorry I can't remember who, it may be on this thread even).

What you already said seems sensible. A plant that has been dried is not going to "produce" anything, but decay during drying may alter things.

OK, I buy that, but how long does it take? How would anyone know this?

How do you stop the herb from drying in 3-4 days if you're hang drying and the conditions are good enough to dry it in a short period of time? A stiff breeze, low rh, and a temp of 80F will dry herb in less than a week.

Well ive always done the old school hang drying, but im gonna be drying my next harvest in a bud dryer, so ill have something to compare it too.

And these tests have said what? Is the stuff dried longer more potent? Does it just taste better?

Well, i dont think thats true. For me, having a couple of plants hang drying for weeks is a HUGE security problem. Unless I dry in my flowering chamber, but then its a HUGE waste of time that could be spent flowering the next generation.

The debate is all over the net.
And again, I just wanted to say that I dont necessarily disagree with you, but I dont think anything is a proven fact at the moment.

Hmmm, the format of response, the verbage " having buds drying is a HUGE security problem ", and "Anecdotal evidence is all over the net. Good scientific evidence is not. If you have some please point it out to me. "

Kind of reminds me of a certian Aussie gentleman known to be very helpful...

I've heard the thing about 48 hours of total darkness before hacking... This was on some seed venders site talking about White Widow. I also read it in Jorge's Med bible that growers like to leave 'em in the dark a day longer for more trich development but I just read it. Don't know how true it is.

mabee i dont make it simple enough.
when i say it makes it stronger i mean that by cutting the dry/cure shorter it wont have time to finish it`s process correctly. the more sugars it can convert before it dries up and stops the more thc.

and as far as that artical on the last page goes from wikipedia or whomever. i read the first few lines and stopped. they said to harvest when the hairs are red, thats wrong. it`s the trich`s not the pistils.
so after reading that i wouldn`t think that any of thier info would be accurate. could just be outdated.

Personally, I think you guys are thinking too much.

I hang strings, cut it up into managable pieces, then hang the pieces on strings until everything is dryish(stems snap) and jar it up. Check on it every couple of days to monitor the smell and make sure there's very little moisture(no condensation), burp, and repeat.

Awesome thread! This should be a sticky. I do have one very basic question though :)

When you say the stem snaps easily, should it be brittle or bend some and then crack? Probably a stupid question but after 5+ years of experience and extensive knowledge of growing, drying/curing seems to be the part i can't get exactly right. i agree that it is an art!!! Thanks for all the great info guys.

I have dried bud for a month. I hang the whole plant (after trimming leafs). I do it now in about 2 weeks and cure for a month.

ok i had my first harvest and my buds dried in a week, they were brittle and the stems snapped but i was told that hang dry9iong for a month is optimal for hang drying and i was wondering would the conditions have to be perfect to achieve this??? Humidity 45%-55% temps 63-70f and a fan blowing on low for a good month??? Is this right???
not hanging for a month, curing for a month. Your buds will be petrified if you hang for a month...

get them to snap not bend then snap. couple more days is all that makes tht difference in most cases. i have noticed thet moisten up a tad bit when curing them. the last of the moisture comes out of the actual bud.

Answered exactly how I needed it to be, mine are bending slightly then snapping. One or two more days before final manicure and jars I suppose. Thanks Bonz!

but yeah if ur buds are brittle and ur stems still dont snap thrwo the buds in a plastic bag or a ziplock bag for maybe 12 hours so that the excess moisture comes out from the stem and back into the buds hang them bitches bak up n then cure
