Thai doctors have seen success in treating severe cases of the new coronavirus with combination of medications for flu and HIV, with initial results showing vast improvement 48 hours after applying the treatment, they said on Sunday.

The doctors from Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok said a new approach in coronavirus treatment had improved the condition of several patients under their care, including one 70-year-old Chinese woman from Wuhan who tested positive for the coronavirus for 10 days.
The drug treatment includes a mixture of anti-HIV drugs lopinavir and ritonavir, in combination with flu drug oseltamivir in large doses.
“This is not the cure, but the patient’s condition has vastly improved. From testing positive for 10 days under our care, after applying this combination of medicine the test result became negative within 48 hours,” Dr. Kriangska Atipornwanich, a lung specialist at Rajavithi, told reporters.

Doesn't work that way. You have to be exposed to that virus to gain resistance to it, assuming you survive. There is no vaccine for it right now. Pneumonia is a lung infection caused by several different pathogens.

Let's just hope this disease doesn't make it here before the vaccines are ready. Let's hope it doesn't mutate and defeat the new vaccine too.

But, really, this thread is more about the shitty rulers that are afflicting the Chinese people than anything else. The root problem and the one that will linger after this crisis is over is the corrupt, authoritarian government over there. I'm not a fan of Trump and his bungled self-serving trade negotiations but I was never in favor of extending trade to China. Not even when Bill Clinton expanded it. Yep, it's often bacterial and can finish off an older patient who is sick and weakened with something else, so if your over 60 a pneumonia shot is advised. If your concerned about the bug, at least cover that base. I'm not saying people wouldn't get sick, but if it's similar to a cold virus there might also be some bases covered there immunity wise, kinda like a cow pox vs smallpox ting, one immunize you against the other because the pathogens are related.

Estimates are 10% BTW. We really don't know because China's government is not forthcoming with accurate information. They are turning people away from hospitals and people are dying at home in the middle of what is effectively a 7-24 curfew. 2%? 10%? For all we know, these miss the mark on the low end because mortality to this disease cannot now be tracked.

Yes, people who are susceptible to viral pneumonia might benefit from a vaccination and they should talk to their doctor about getting one. Of course, right wing disinformation about vaccines defeats even this good advice.

If in China a billion people quickly became infected with this virus and 2% died that's a lot of bodies at one time, 20 million more or less. If the mortality rate was 10% with a billion people (1.4 billion in China) a 100 million could persh in within a few months, just in China. Aside from the grief it would be a logistical and public health nightmare, with world travel by plane it would be a global pandemic in no time at all.

Was reading predicted financial effects by country in Financial Times (paywall so I won't post link). China represents 30% of worldwide consumer spending, so changes in growth there ripple across the globe. A 1% decrease in GDP growth in China will result in 6% decrease of GDP growth in Canada. These are changes in growth not overall GDP. China gets a cold, Canada gets the flu. It looks as if China's problems are triggering a worldwide recession.
