Are you venting out of your grow room?

What's your base ambient temperature in the room the tent is in? Are you venting the hot air from the tent to the same room the tent is in?

Its 20 to 21 on average wide open basement just vents in there lots of air movement in the basement constantly letting the dogs in and out

Yes you can but all you need to buy is a 1000 watt dimmable ballast and if it gets too warm just dim the light. Most dimmables are 1000/750/600. All you should have to do is swap the ballast and light. You won't need to do anything with the hood or exhaust. A bulb and a ballast. Plug and play.

So really I just have to replace the ballast not the hood and everything?
You need a 1,000 watt ballast, 1000 watt bulb (ideally two...a metal Halide and Eye Hortilux HPS bulb) and a hood. If you already have an air cooled hood with your 600, you’re set. I really liked the Phantom 1,000 watt ballast that I used before converting to LED (due to heat).

Typically, you can swap out ballasts and bulbs with the same hood without problem.

Personally, I'd just buy an entire new kit. That way, if you ever decide to set up another area/tent, you've got a complete 600W lamp kit for it. The cost of the ballast and bulb isn't a whole lot less than a kit that includes a new hood as well (in some cases, it's even cheaper to buy the entire kit).

A 600 watt bulb and 1000 watt bulb use the same Mogul socket. so a 1000 watt bulb will screw right into your existing hood fixture. Most ballasts have the same connections. So you should be able to just disconnect one and connect the other. But a 1000 watt dimmable light kit with ballast, bulbs, hood, timer, and hangers is under $200. It's not a bad idea to have some spare equipment around.
