You want to wait until 70-90% of the hairs go amber. Consider buying a jeweler's loupe. They're cheap on Amazon. The trich test is more accurate, but most people still just go by the hairs.

How many plants have you harvested?

Post a picture let’s see.

if you’ve been rubbing the buds to smell them then this can cause premature ambering of the hairs (pistils)

70-90% of the hairs being amber is wrong.

you want pretty much 100% of the pistils to be amber and to have began to recede back into the calyx.

most people pull their plants far to early.

post a picture of your plant that you’re concerned with and I’ll let you know what’s happening.

I'm actually on my first grow, but if you look up the Pistil Method, EVERY source says 70-90% with very little deviation. I must have read this well over 100 times from different sources.

You don’t want to ever harvest based on one signal. So anything to advises you to is wrong.

Stigma changing to 90% + reddish and shrinking towards buds is the first sign of maturity a plant begins to show. That tells you the plant is done trying to reproduce and grow fresh bud, and is ready to swell and ripen. During the swelling process the buds won’t grow much on the outside but will bulk up and get more dense inside. Increasing significantly in weight.

Plants typically need 2-3 weeks AFTeR the stigma change before they are done swelling and properly ripened. Don’t bother looking at trichomes before then, and make sure when you do look at them that you look at the buds. The trichomes are the final signal of ripeness. It’s also important look at trichomes from the side not the top. From the top the bulbous head of the trichome can magnify the opaque stalk underneath and give a false impression of maturity.
