Better lights cost more, no getting around that. If you went HPS as an alternative, you'd have to invest in an exhaust fan, and ducting. Your power bill will increase (mine went up almost $100/month when I was running my 1000w hps.)

Yeah the power costs in some places do make LED's attractive but in places with cheap power the upfront costs of quality LED's are hard to justify if you can keep the heat under control. I run my lights during off-peak hours at night so my electricity cost is about 0.4¢ a kilowatt hour. I would need to spend 5 times as much to get a decent LED to replace my HID. It doesn't make financial sense to tie my money up for 4 years to recover the cost of going to LED's. And by then I'll be stuck with some expensive outdated lights because who knows what's going to be available in 4 years.
