Why don’t we see more original seed stock?

Hi RIU, pretty novice grower here. I was just wondering, why does it seem like the seeds that the hype strains were hunted from are hardly available?

Do they just sell out too fast? I always figured that if both the parents were still around, the breeders would make a killing from more batches.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Do you know how many people on here assume that since the seeds are “sold out” they must be good? Great marketing.

What do you consider original seed stock?

Some of us consider original seed stock to be landraces. Much of the stuff out there being hyped up is just some pollen chuck using other peoples pollen chucks.

Why not make more?
If I saw my work on strainly for 2-3x what I charged I’d definitely make more

Also I’m not saying creating a shortage to make demand high is good, I’m just shooting ideas.

And I mean like the stock the MAC1 was found from, although I think he did sell those

I don't like to trash individual breeders, they're just trying to make a living after all, but I will say there are PLENTY of breeders out there with strains easily as good and in many cases better than the "hype" strains, but they simply don't buy into the marketing game. Some breeders are more social media savvy and actually have a presence on all of the forums like these, known or otherwise, and actively promote their strains. There are also breeders and seed banks that actively trash their competition. The guys who don't play that game might not be the most popular, but their fan base appreciates them for it. The entire premium priced AUTO market is based on artificial scarcity..."ohh here comes a "drop" please take my money!!"

I like the answers I’m getting so far.
So you think some people keep some around to sell for when prices go nuts because of the lack of supply?

It’s not as simple as plant this week and reap seeds the next.

There’s more than one strain most breeders are working with.

Etc.

Resellers prob do. There's a guy called Budzaralicous or some shit on Strainly that will put brand new hype packs up for sale, days after the sold out drop for $100 more etc.

I don't get this "Lack of supply" reference. Just buy something else. Most of the stuff out there is pretty much the same. Tastes a little different, different THC levels, etc... All gets you high. I can guarantee that most people couldn't tell different strains apart if given a blind taste test. Just get seeds from reputable outfits and grow it.

Bingo! If people had any idea how we were forced to name something before some “knowledgeable” people would buy it.

“Sorry, chief. Can’t sell it without a name.”

Its easy to get Acapulco gold, NL#5, sour diesel, G13, afghani kush, hash passion, bubblegum, etc...at least they're marketed as such. Whether or not that's the actual genetic line ur getting is another question. They're kinda interesting but not something you could make a killing at. But those are some that got breeders through the 80s,90s to get us where we are now...id rather try some of todays unique fire like todays Wedding Cake is just awesome...new times, new standard. With that said i have some hash passion pollen i hope holds up that connects me to older times

I'm growing out some Nepali Temple now. Good old hash plant genetics and I got the beans for free from another forum where seeds and clones are openly traded and given away. Regular photo plants so plan to make seeds with those and maybe fem versions later.

I have around 2000 seeds of various strains. About half I've made and the other half gifted to me and I'm sending most of them to one of the mods there for disbursement to members and all they pay is the postage or a small donation to the forum. I order seeds from one of the breeders there that lives in WA and get them up here for $20Can to cover the postage for 2 strains about 20 seeds each. I have over a dozen now.

Trades and such are openly discussed in the forums but all personal stuff is done in PMs. I have a couple dozen strains that need to get sprouted some day so not really looking to get many more. Heirloom Maui Wowie Cherry Cut Pheno is high on my list for the next ones but some Ancestral Skunk might be nice too. Hoping to get some Chocolate Thai once the guy gets the seeds made. That's the one the old Thai Sticks were made from. Loved those!

The bulk of new seeds are such mixed up mongrels for the most part they are almost the same. Still some really good stuff out there but you need to hunt and be prepared to cough up a few bux.

:peace:
