Heyy'all!! I decided to give shroom cultivation a try, bought some grain spawn bags and spore syringes. I injected the entire 10ml of spore syringe into the 2lb bag of grain spawn lol didnt realize until the deed was already done that you're only supposed to use a little bit! You think they will still colonize or is it a bunk bag?

You have done no harm, just a little wasteful is what it is. It will prob colonize really fast because you used the whole thing but will be more than fine unless somehow a contam got in there but it wouldn't happen because of what you did.

Alright cool, I was a worried it's now too wet in the bag, and I also heard if you introduce too much spore they run out of food too fast before they're able to colonize all the grain

You weren’t wrong to wonder about the moisture. Adding a whole syringe to only 2lbs of grain can definitely increase the moisture level too high. However this process can be forgiving sometimes and it you might be just fine. I typically use roughly 1-1.5ml per lb of grain.

I wouldn’t throw out the bag until it obviously isn’t growing or develops a contamination issue.

Next time use the spores to make a liquid culture then inoculate with that... spores take alot longer to colonize and they also tend to be much more prone to contamination imo...

Yea man it's pretty wet in there, like lots of pooling. Idk how itll turn out but I will keep em for a while and see what happens. No point in getting rid of em you know? What am I looking for in terms of contam?

Contains can be any number of things. Anything that is a weird color other then white would be the simple answer. Bacterial contams don’t usually show as a growing colorful mass like mold. With bacteria you might notice that the extra moisture starts turning dark colored or milky which can be a sign something is happening in the bag.

Yea I heard that, how do I turn spore syringe into LC?
You can get everything you need from Walmart and if you dont have a pressure cooker you can also sterilize it in the microwave... you can also order one if you choose... you just inject 2cc/5cc spore solution into lc and after 3 or 4 days the mycelium will grow then you can shake it up and use the liquid culture to inoculate your grains. It cuts down the colonization time significantly which also helps decrease contamination giving them much less time to develop...there are several different teks to choose from

So my grain spawn seems to be drying out, I think because I had it close to the heater. Can i inject some water into the bags to rehydrate them a bit?

I wouldn’t be fucking with it personally. Also wouldn’t be setting it directly in front of a heater. An ambient 75-80 degrees will provide good temps to colonize:

Yea it only gets up to 68° tops where I have them so I have a small heater near them but keep it father away now then I did the first few days

You think they'll still colonize if grain is dry? Should I put a humidifier near them? Would that even do anything?

Thats super risky...id rehydrate and pc it again before id do that personally but you can always try. I wont say it wont work tho because it very well may...

Yes they can still colonize. Patience young grasshopper... experiment, but take notes and observe. Try not to shake it up if the grains are lose let it colonize for like 3 days if using lc or 4, 5 days or more if using a spore syringe after inoculation, before you pick it up and check for mycelium growth

YEah give it time to see what happens. The grain should have moisture inside that will feed the mycelium. If you shot the whole syringe in there it should already have more moisture then it was intended to originally had. Sometimes the grains on the outside of a bag look more dry, and they might colonize a little slower. But I'd honestly rather have a little too dry then too wet.

Thanks guys!! One bag looks like its colonizing pretty well, it's been 9 days since inoculation with spore syringe. I know to break up and mix the grain when its 20% colonized but is that supposed to be 20% in one spot or 20% overall? Cus I think overall with all the little spots included it's almost about 20% what do y'all think?
