This is just the beginning, pipelines and oil exports along with confiscating assets and other shit undreamed of. Joe needs to roll lot's of anti Russian shit and only anti Russian shit into a bill and present it to congress. Let Moscow Mitch deal with it as Donald howls from Mar Logo while Vlad squeezes his nuts to keep the GOP on Russia's side. Cold War 2 and a new policy of containment.

U.S. Sanctions Russia Over Election, SolarWinds

Apr.15 -- The U.S. is readying sanctions against Russia that could target about a dozen people. Sources say it’s also expected to expel up to 10 officials and diplomats. The move comes as President Joe Biden grapples with alleged election interference and the SolarWinds Hack. Financial penalties will also be levied across Russian entities with bonds tipped as the next sanction target.

One demon at a time, Russia is the more acute problem for now. Dealing with China will require a completely different strategy, China is more of a rival and a Helluva lot bigger threat than Russia in the longer term. Russia is a nuked up third rate power with an economy smaller than Italy's with a bad stupid attitude. China on the other hand is playing the international diplomacy game and is entrenched in the international economic system, they've got the world by the nuts and are quite happy with their growth rate and the current situation. Russia first, like Napoleon, take the enemies one at a time and don't let them combine against you.

China Poses Biggest Threat to U.S., Intelligence Report Says - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

China Poses Biggest Threat to U.S., Intelligence Report Says
The annual assessment does not predict a military confrontation with either Russia or China, but it suggests that intelligence operations, cyberattacks and global drives for influence will intensify.

WASHINGTON — China’s effort to expand its growing influence represents one of the largest threats to the United States, according to a major annual intelligence report released on Tuesday, which also warned of the broad national security challenges posed by Moscow and Beijing.

The report does not predict a military confrontation with either Russia or China, but it suggests that so-called gray-zone battles for power, which are meant to fall short of inciting all-out war, will intensify with intelligence operations, cyberattacks and global drives for influence.

The assessment highlights the opportunities and challenges for the Biden administration. Iran, for instance, has not advanced its work on a nuclear weapon, potentially giving President Biden some room to maneuver. But it paints a grim prognosis for a peace deal in Afghanistan, a day before Mr. Biden is set to announce that he will withdraw American forces by September. Critics could use the report to suggest that the president is ignoring intelligence agencies’ predictions as he pushes forward with the drawdown.

While much of the report describes traditional national security challenges, it also gives far more attention to climate change and global health than previous threat assessments have done. That shift reflects a pledge by the Biden administration’s top intelligence officials to focus more on such nontraditional challenges.

The report puts China’s push for “global power” first on the list of threats, followed by Russia, Iran and North Korea. There are typically few broad revelations in the annual reports, which are a collection of declassified assessments, although the intelligence agencies’ ranking of threats and how they change over time can be telling.

I wonder if conspiracy to commit election fraud is covered by Manfort's pardon? But that's not really the point or him the target, Donald and others are and you don't need to know about this shit to be convicted as being a party to that conspiracy. If Manafort doesn't want to testify, he has no 5th amendment rights on this particular case (no state crime either) and they can give him his old cell back until he comes around.

Hard to believe Manafort's phone isn't ringing off the hook with death threats for being a fucking traitor, but I suppose the threat's will really begin if he testifies against Trump or was a witness in the conspiracy trial.

Has an important 'missing link' been added to the Russia scandal?
The man overseeing Trump's campaign allegedly shared internal information with a Russian operative, who conveyed it to Russian Intelligence Services.

In facebook early days zuck was looking for more money, Putin gave him a boatload and has owned him ever since.
And here I thought he was just a greed driven amoral little asshole. If Putin has any leverage at all we need to know the whole story, social media needs regulation and so does cable TV by the FCC. AM hate radio can be eliminated by turning the bandwidth digital and not licensing useless bastards who spread disinformation, social division and hate. Not just highspeed internet needs to be rolled out in rural areas, but tightly regulated free cable TV (just the big networks and no free political channels) made for morons, it will give the cable companies a chance to sell them premium and sports channels too.

Bring back the fairness doctrine and apply it to cable news also.
I like the idea of an active FCC to put Fox in a box. Say Hannity lies on TV, he should be hauled in and asked to repeat it under oath, just to help him get his important message out mind you, nobody is stepping on his free speech rights, no fines. If he lied on the air, his hearing testimony should be required to be played and Sean needs to give an apology for lying and deceiving his audience. This should apply to all broadcasters and cable regulated by the FCC and apply to the "main stream media", but it won't affect journalists who follow stands and practices at all. It should however make a clear distinction between opinion and facts, Sean's trouble will be sprinkling in bullshit with opinion. Oh and call in his script writer too, just for clarity mind you, we wouldn't want to step on anybody's first amendment rights, just determine the truth under oath and broadcast it if there is an issue.

A new take on the "fairness" doctrine, call it the honesty and integrity doctrine, or better yet, the fair and balanced doctrine.

And Hate/Evangelical radio (if it wasn't already in the Fairness doctrine, I am not 100% on what it is all about).
It's nice to see a WH press secretary who is intelligent, prepared and aggressive with bullshitters. She had a list of assholes and knew the issues they would be chewing on, notice the quick glance at the notes. She is only gonna get better at this stuff as she gains experience, a year from now they will be sweating when they try that shit. Though she does have the advantage of knowing the limited number of things that they will go after and the narrative the will try to inject, they are entirely predictable and you've seen it demonstrated.

Joe must have this guy on a choke chain by now, if it was me, he'd be like Charlie McCarthy with my hand shoved up his ass working his mouth for him... Maybe Joe gave him some goodies and military "advisors", so he can slaughter large numbers of Russians and give Vlad not just a bloody face, but a broken nose, jaw and missing teeth.

America has done far worse for a far less cause and for a long fucking time. Remember the aftermath of the Iranian hostage crises under Carter? How long was Iran in the shithouse? How many were slaughtered when America set Saddam on them? The best predictor of future behavior is past performance and this is how these things are usually done.

Ukraine President Zelensky Is Ready for War With Russia, Vows to 'Stand to the Last Man' (newsweek.com)

Ukraine President Zelensky Is Ready for War With Russia, Vows to 'Stand to the Last Man'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday night and warned his citizens that the country would "stand to the last man" in the event of a war with Russia, as tensions continue to build along the border between the two nations.

"Does Ukraine want war? No. Is it ready for it? Yes," Zelensky said during a Tuesday address, according to The New York Times." Our principle is simple: Ukraine does not start a war first, but Ukraine always stands to the last man."

Zelensky's statements come on the eve of Russian President Vladimir Putin's annual state of the union address Wednesday. During his speech, Zelensky addressed Putin directly, urging him to meet for a peace summit in Donbas, a war-torn region where Ukraine's military has battled Russian-backed separatists for years.

"It is impossible to bring peace on a tank," Zelensky said in Russian, before adding: "I am ready to invite you to meet anywhere in the Ukrainian Donbas where there is war."

So far, the U.S. and NATO have employed "provocative actions," with at least two warships in the Black Sea, The Hill reported, due to increasing tensions between the two nations.

In recent days, Russia has amassed the largest concentration of forces in the region in years, raising concerns that the country may plan to invade. Tensions between the two nations have since reached their highest levels since 2014, when Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea peninsula and large-scale fighting broke out in the country's east. That conflict has already cost nearly 14,000 lives.

Russian troops now number at least 40,000 in Crimea, with another 40,000 in regions along the border, which equates to roughly 10 percent of the country's entire military force, NBC News reported last week.

On April 15, Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba warned that if Russia crosses the 'red line,' that it will "suffer."

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia’s defense minister on Thursday ordered troops back to their permanent bases following massive drills amid tensions with Ukraine, but said they should leave their weapons behind in western Russia for another exercise later this year.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the Russian pullback along their border.

After watching the drills, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu declared the maneuvers in Crimea and wide swathes of western Russia over and ordered the military to pull the troops that took part in them back to their permanent bases.

“I consider the goals of the snap check of readiness fulfilled,” Shoigu said. “The troops have shown their capability to defend the country and I decided to complete the drills in the South and Western military districts.”

Shoigu said the troops should return to their bases by May 1, but he ordered their heavy weapons kept in western Russia for another massive military exercise. The weapons were remaining at the Pogonovo firing range in the southwestern Voronezh region 160 kilometers (100 miles) east of the border with Ukraine.

The Russian troop buildup near Ukraine that came amid increasing violations of a cease-fire in war-torn eastern Ukraine raised concerns in the West, which urged the Kremlin to pull its forces back.

A Ukrainian soldier was killed Thursday by separatist fire in the east, bringing the number of Ukrainian troops killed this year to 32.

The U.S. and NATO have said the Russian buildup near Ukraine was the largest since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and threw its support behind separatists in Ukraine’s eastern industrial heartland of Donbas.

Ukraine’s president applauded the Russian troops’ pullback.

“The reduction of troops on our border proportionally reduces tension,” Zelenskyy said on Twitter. He noted that Ukraine remains vigilant but “welcomes any steps to decrease the military presence and deescalate the situation in Donbas.”

Earlier this week, Zelenskyy offered to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Donbas to defuse tensions.

Putin responded in televised remarks Thursday, saying if the Ukrainian leadership wants to settle the conflict in Donbas, it should first engage in talks with separatist leaders there and only after that discuss it with Russia. If Zelenskyy wants to discuss normalizing ties with Russia, he’s welcome to come to Moscow, the Russian leader said.

The Russian military hasn’t reported the number of additional troops that had been moved to Crimea and parts of southwestern Russia near Ukraine, and it wasn’t immediately clear from Shoigu’s statement if all of them will now be pulled back.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the maneuvers in Crimea involved more than 60 ships, over 10,000 troops, around 200 aircraft and about 1,200 military vehicles.

The exercise featured the landing of more than 2,000 paratroopers and 60 military vehicles on Thursday. Fighter jets covered the airborne operation.

Shoigu flew in a helicopter over the Opuk firing range in Crimea to oversee the exercise. He later declared the drills over, but ordered the military to stand ready to respond to any “adverse developments” during NATO’s Defender Europe 2021 exercise. The NATO drills began in March and are to last until June.

“NATO has significantly intensified its military activities in the region,” Shoigu said. “Intelligence gathering has increased and the intensity and scope of operational training has been growing. One of the alliance’s main coalition groups is being deployed in the Black Sea region.”

Russia long has bristled at the deployment of NATO’s forces near its borders and stepped up its drills as relations with the West have sunk to post-Cold War lows over the annexation of Crimea, Russian meddling in elections, hacking attacks and other issues.

Last week, Russia has announced that it would close broad areas of the Black Sea near Crimea to foreign navy ships and state vessels until November, a move that drew Ukrainian protests and raised Western concerns. Russia also announced restrictions on flights near Crimea this week.

Moscow has rejected Ukrainian and Western concerns about the troop buildup, arguing that it’s free to deploy its forces anywhere on Russian territory. But at the same time, the Kremlin sternly warned Ukrainian authorities against trying to use force to retake control of the rebel east, where seven years of fighting with Russia-backed separatists have killed more than 14,000 people. The Kremlin says Russia could be forced to intervene in eastern Ukraine to protect civilians in the region.

Amid the tensions, Ukraine’s president on Wednesday signed a law allowing the call-up of reservists for military service without announcing a mobilization.

Hopefully things are calming down and Putin takes his sanctions like a man.

Russia says it is ending military buildup at Ukrainian border
Russia on Thursday said it would be ending its massive military buildup at the Ukrainian border, which has increased tensions with Ukraine, the United States and other Western countries.

Russia said troops would be ordered to return to their bases by May 1, with Russian state media reporting the military had completed exercises being conducted near the border, according to Defense Minister Sergei Shoygu.

The drills in Crimea, which occurred as recently as Thursday, included more than 60 ships, more than 10,000 troops, roughly 200 aircraft and 1,200 military vehicles, according to The Associated Press. It had prompted weeks of concern about a potential Russian invasion.

Shoygu said Thursday, “The troops have shown their defense capability and I decided to complete the drills in the South and Western military districts.”

The Russian buildup near the Ukrainian border was the largest since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and announced its support for pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Last week, Russia announced that it would close portions of the Black Sea near Crimea to foreign naval ships and state vessels through November and also said this week it would place restrictions on flights near Crimea, arguing that they did not yet meet international law, according to the AP.

On Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that satellite images showed Russia had moved more warplanes, troops and equipment near the Ukrainian border than it had initially said.

The finding came a day after the European Union's top foreign policy minister, Josep Borrell, warned that amid all-time high tensions at the border, “a spark” could set off a war between the two countries.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba warned that the Russian military buildup was “expected to reach a combined force of over 120,000 troops,” and urged the U.S. and other Western countries to increase sanctions to put pressure on Moscow to pull back.

Despite the announced pullback, Axios noted Thursday that tens of thousands of troops remain within striking distance of Ukraine, with tensions likely to persist.

The Biden administration has aimed to take a tough stance on Russia, and on Wednesday U.S. diplomats met with Russian officials to discuss a recent series of sanctions between the two nations.

Last week, the U.S. issued sweeping sanctions on Russia, responding in part to Moscow’s actions toward Ukraine, as well as Russia’s espionage operations and election interference.

In response, Russia gave the U.S. a list of sanctioned American diplomats, though it was not clear exactly who was included.

The Biden administration has said that it will continue to defend Ukraine, though Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday warned Western nations that anyone who crosses a "red line" will be met with a harsh response.
