Actually people are harvesting early because they are too focused on the trichs and not the overall look of the plant. Some of us never bother looking at the trichs and never harvest early. Trichs are overrated and not as accurate as many think.
Well, amber trichomes are literally dying. They are less potent. You end up losing potemcy on the plant if you dont pay attention to the trichomes. I have to lab test every strain i put in my dispensaries and its very noticable. If you dont pay attention and amber 70% of your tirchs, you lost a TON of potency in your final product. trichomes are literally the entire point of growing cannabis, doesnt make any sense at ALL to not pay attention to them

People are looking at trichomes before the plant is even close to ready. They see damaged amber trichomes or amber on sugar leaves and chop.

As @xtsho does I don't even look at trichomes anymore. It's a waste of effort when you actually know what a finished plant looks like.

Well thats why you cant just look at one aspect, obviously your plant will amber a couple here and there, but you have to pay attention to pistols and other indications of life cycle. But coming from the medical cannabis industry who deals with labs and getting higher testing buds every day of my life....you can not ignore trichomes. Plain and Simple. You might know what it lookds like, but its not gunna be as potent as it could be. Not even close. Like i said, the entire reason to grow cannabis is to produce and pile on trichome...why ignore them. They have different stages of life just as the plant does.

The reason everyone that smokes my weed prefers it over dispensary weed is because I harvest it when it's ready not based on some percentage with the trichomes. Not too many people on this site are impressed with dispensary weed. That's why many of us grow our own.

Do whatever you prefer man, but reading books and any commercial professional grower will tell you, you cant just ignore them and pull whenever you feel like it if you want the best product. Thats all imma say anymore lol.

I don't need to read a book.

Anyway, it's interesting that you would bring up medical. Some of the compounds that provide the medical effects people are seeking exist in higher amounts with a fully ripe plant. It's not just about THC and it's psychoactive effects.

Dispensary weed is grown for a profit. Much of it is harvested sooner than it should be to reduce costs and get the product to market to be sold. Lab results showing THC levels only come from a small sample submitted and do not necessarily represent the majority of the crop.

In Oregon what's called a "field sample" is used for "batches".

Fully ripe plant literally means when the trichomes are mature. And half of the growers i know breed specific strains and test the cannabinoid and terpene profiles speficially to find medicinal benifits. Terpenes have more benifits than THC by far and there are tons of them. But they develop IN the trichomes. Your talking about pulling early in "clear" trichome stage to boost potency tests...because like i said when they amber they die and reduce potency and terps. I literally talk to labs and growers every day of my life lol. I can tell you dont read books. Google is literally free...try googling "How to tell when cannabis is ripe" or "when to harvest cannabis" and look at literally any website. OR READ A BOOK

I don't need to read a book and I don't need to google. I also don't need to talk to labs and growers every day of my life either to know when to harvest a cannabis plant.

This is an interesting read. I had to read it twice as the first time I had been smoking some of that weed that I didn't use the trichomes to harvest.

Where did I say that?
You said they arent as accurate and people dont look at them....I took that as it doesnt matter what stage they are in your just pull when the plant lookds ready, no matter what the trichomes look like. Im really not trying to be ugly im just trying to pick your brain as to why

I said they are not as accurate as many people think and that some people don't look at them. Myself being one. If you want to scope the trichomes every hour for the alleged "Perfect" time to harvest then by all means go ahead. But as I said previously all this "Lab" tested dispensary cannabis that you're around every day of your life is not that impressive to many of us. It might look good in a bag to sell but much of it was harvested too soon. I could care less what some lab tests say. And for that matter some of these lab tests are also not as accurate as people think.

Anyway, it's disappointing to see a new grower harvest an obviously early plant because they thought they saw some 25% amber number with the trichomes. And it happens all the time.

Being new I’m curious about this too.

Did you used to look at trichomes when you started out and eventually just developed an eye for what a ready to harvest plant looks like over time?

The picture posted earlier made me think maybe the guy mixed up trichomes for pistils and pulled when 20% of the pistils had changed. That was a nice bud cluster too.

I used to scope the trichomes but that was a long time ago.
