How is this hollow topped stem ever gonna make it? Isent a split gonna happen sooner or later?

Whenever I top a well developed stem, it's always hollow in the middle. Just keep the plant healthy, and it will be okay. I never tape it off or plug it up. I treat the whole plant including around the opening on the hollow stem with preventative maintenance for pests. I dont know if left untreated it would be a way for pests to attack the plant. I have seen a picture posted on RIU showing ants going inside the plant through a hole where a branch was trimmed off.
