I have a jeweler's loupe from my first grow way back when and I never figured out how to use it. It seems like I have to get way too close to the plant to have enough light on the plant to see the trichomes. Any thoughts?

I don't use anything these days. I just let the plants grow until they look good and done and then I chop.
When I did use a loupe I sported one of these state of the art units.
