What causes foxtails and why are they undesirable?

Just curious as to the cause/prevention and that hate culture towards them

Heat stress, light intensity or root probs.

People don't like them because they're ugly and sometimes airy. Some plants just get it lightly, and it makes the nugs fatter.

As fish mentioned above. But genetics also play a big role in fox tailing traits.

I grew a stardawg plant that fox tailed and put out a few pollen sacks three grows in a row, I suspect due to excessive heat, hps bulb in too small of a tent and inadequate heat extraction. Never tried after resolving the problem, switched plant just in case it was a genetic issue.

Fat plump foxtails is primo smoke. Runny airy foxtails is larf.

They are mostly caused by heat stress. My outdoor temps got up to 109 and of course my window AC gave up the ghost that day and in spite of all my efforts, I got some significant leave damage on my plants. They've mostly recovered with probably just a slight drop in overall yield, but all 4 strains started throwing up foxtails like crazy. On a side note, the extreme heat stress caused them to produce a ton of trichomes a few days later, really early on in flower. They aren't bad at all, just be sure to check the trichs elsewhere on the plant when determining harvest date.

As others said heat stress is the biggest culprit and possibly too much N in flower dont help either also it can just be a genetic trait to be honest i find many new growers confuse stacked calyxes for foxtailing as well so theres a number of influences at work with foxtailing

That’s the problem is they are white haired but it looks like the older part of the bud is brown

90 will do it for sure, but it really isn't a big deal. Just harvest when the main bud is ready and ignore the foxtails, they might still be throwing white hairs when the rest of the bud is 50% amber trich's and ready to harvest. Always a good idea to scope multiple spots on a bud/plant.

Some of the big fat ones look like you could throw a paper on them and they’d be perfect joints.
