Please stop using peat products

I gave it up at the start of Covid. I was using Jack's Magic, which is peat based, I couldn't get it. Now I am using composted wood and green waste with added farm manure and perlite. The UK government has since announced the imminent banning of commercial peat sales in 2023, so I am glad I got ahead of the game.

Also as well as peat bogs being a finite resource and a massive carbon soak, the digging of peat releases trapped Co2 into the atmosphere. People should use coco either as it has a massive carbon footprint. Bat Guano and Seabird Guano are bad too, not only do they have a big carbon footprint from air miles, they are decimating ancient bird and bat colonies to get it.

I have taken a big look at the environmental impact of my grow. I have invested in better lights to lower my electricity consumption, I have swapped to a electricity supplier that only offers tariffs that use renewable generation. I have also stopped growing indoors during the summer months and grow Autos in poly tunnels from April to September. I grow in a loft and I waste so much energy controlling heat and humidity in the summer it would be better to use the light and that nature provides. I did two runs of outdoor Autos this summer and the results were superb. I also veg a few photos in my conservatory so I can get going right away in september.

I am only using a locally sourced medium that is made from my garden waste. (I have enrolled in the local council's garden waste scheme, they take my garden waste and it is taken to a local processing plant and composted and I can then buy the compost at cost, a total of about 15 miles round trip, not hundreds or even thousands.) I can buy rotted manure from the local Livery Stables.

My next thing is to stop using bottled nutrients, due to the plastics used in the packaging and the potential air miles. I am looking into dry amendments, I am going to conduct experiments using Fish, Blood and Bone and work from there. I have just taken some clones of RQS Hulkberry to experiment on.

I fight with the baggers at the grocery store all the time. They're just kids doing the job the way they were told to but they put a cheese in a small bag by itself and i just cant help but say something. No put that in another bag, i don't want to add to the plastic already out there. I got a few of em trained up now for when they see me, they know what i want. Yeah i could bring a reusable bag but im a busy guy. That aint happening.

I'd love to support this no-peat thing, i would, it's just i know human nature...it wont stop...even if we outlawed it there's an enormous stockpile of already packaged. This is a lost cause on me, sorry. The stuff is fabulous, and of all the sins of man...this aint as high as some want to it be on the priority list of stuff we need to stop asap. I do admire those that wish to be vocal on it.

Do the fish bones simply walk to where they're needed? Canada has plenty of peat. Horse manure is very low on the scale of fertilizer.

When u say commercial does that mean all shops or just big businesses? Cause if it’s going to be a case of importing it especially then I’ll look to be growing in coco again

All sales, AFAIK. It will no longer be available to buy. A lot of UK outlets are already phasing it out. I went to my local Wickes and they have already got peat free only. I notice that Westland are now selling Jack's Magic at 150L for £10, when it's gone it's gone. At that price I was tempted to stock up, it makes no sense to let the already dug stuff go to waste.

Coco is as bad as peat, as it is all imported.

I'm starting a hydroponic micro greens business, and going to be using plastic food grade dehydration mesh\netting made specifically for the cannabis industry as my medium.

Each 10"x20" sheet (cut to fit 1020 mesh bottom trays) I cut from the roll can be re-used 100's or 1000's of times, over and over. Scrape them clean after harvest and good to go again. 2 grades of the mesh actually.. one being a finer mesh for the smaller seeds so they don't fall through.

Most micro green growers are still seeding trays with coco/promix/etc..

I'll be saving 1000's of dollars while also getting better results.

As far as growing larger fruiting plants\buds, I can get away with growing massive 2 lb plants in 3 inch net cups and barley use any hydroton with RDWC. Yes the plants are usually scrogged supported, and do split the cups open once in awhile. I bake my pebbles in the oven and re use them too.. Less than a handful per cup needed.

Suppose I could use some polished river rocks or something else though, or even nothing at all with a foam insert...
