Root Clone Experiment

20 years ago I read about root cloning and I quickly reached into my bucket and came up with a handful of roots. I tossed the dirt and roots in some damp promix and thought nothing more about it.

A month or more later I opened the jar and there were little green leaves growing out of the roots. I thought it was just keen and, having a full garden, I then tossed the clones in the garbage and thought nothing more of it.

3 years ago I tried it again, with no good results this time. I thought about the two, their differences, and came to the conclusion that the second effort used roots from an air pruning pot and the first successful try got root tips from the side of a 5 gallon bucket.

.

For this experiment I used roots from spare clones from my bubbler cloner.

I cut the roots into 4 inch lengths (those that were long enough for two 4 inch roots) and laid them in layers of Pro Mix.

There's 35-40 root clippings in this 2 cup jar. I put it in a warm dark drawer and I'll check it in 3 weeks.

Root cloning is a common practice with some plants. I've never done it with cannabis. I always grow from seed and typically make seeds of whatever I grow. Some I make feminized seeds using a couple of clones from a female plant. Cloning this way would allow you to see which female performed the best and use root cuttings from late in flower. I know some people take clones from multiple plants so they don't possibly lose a good pheno. With root cloning you see which plant is best before even cloning.

I think I'm going to give it a try here shortly myself. Thanks for the idea and good luck.

I saw your previous thread about this and wondered if it would work with Autos? I have a very vigerous White Widow that I'd love to clone as it pheno is big and bold. Since I grow in an NFT system the roots are right therewith easy access.

Hobbes, I’ve been learning from your threads for years. Your knowledge and experience is much appreciated!
I was dumping my old pots from plants harvested back in September and noticed lots of white healthy roots in the soil! They’ve been through freezes several nights yet still look healthy. I was wondering when I saw them if they could be used to propagate. Very interested in your experiment!
