First Time Growing in Long Island, Question About Soil

Choose a short flowering strain. Indica dominant. Grow in a spot that gets morning sunshine. Extremely important. Your soil is probably adequate so till it up and mix in a lot of compost. Do not use bark or sawdust. Those attract insects and provide no benefit. Good luck.
I don't know if I should trust the soil or build a 20'x26' flower bed and then fill with supersoil

Yea it gets pretty cold around September but I was looking to get plants in before June 21st
September?? Hmmm... Like how cold we talking? Around here outdoor season harvests mid October to early November and that means sativa strains don't finish before it freezes, which here is about mid October to early November haha. Hotrod is right on about picking indica dom strains.
If you have animals that might eat your plants putting them in an enclosure would be smart. I personally don't think you need much more than tilling some amendments into your ground soil but like pointed out if you want super soil you better get it ready well before planting time.

IMHO if I were you I’d get some 30-50 gl fabric pots and fill them. I’m thinking now and could be wrong but Long Island is probably crap fill covered in sod or spray turf. If you get full sun and are running 12 plants , they’ll get bigger than you probably handle. No offense they just get huge outdoors. Also won’t need to worry about any possible drainage issues
Edit: if you get all day sun looking into white or beige pots might be worth it but I’ve never had issue with black

Trust the soil? Test it like you said, no guessing and always a good idea if planting in ground especially if unknown ground

True that and I’d go more than 6 ft. I did 10-12 ft and it was about as close as I wanted

You think I should ditch the in-ground idea for my first go-around? I think you're right

I’m just saying you might be surprised how big they could get. It’s a lot of work. Research some outdoor threads in or around your state. And also check out an outdoor scrog. If I grow any outside next yr it will be a scrog . I’m done with big , well, tall girls

I spent the entire month of October trimming
Into November. These 2 plants alone.. with a little help from friends.
The later stuff in early November was absolutely beautiful
