Experiments in light levels.

To start off with I had a tent with four 90/180 lights. They would burn cannabis at anything less than 18 in.

So I started a single light at 90 at way far away and lowered it as necessary, adding lights as things started to spread out.

Then I decided this was way too much of a pain in the ass to try to maintain the correct light distance for a given set of plants at a given set of growth. Screw that.

So I built small plastic shelves and wrap them with mylar space blankets and bought cheapo 4x7 watt lights that claimed a cumulative of 80 and lied as expected.

But they make decent lettuce growing lights and great seedling lights. So now I have two shelves dedicated to seedlings and soon to be clones.

It was enough to prove I wanted to have shelves with light closer to me than the tent. So I rebuilt using steel wire bakers rack and picked up another pair of lights that claimed to be 40 watts a piece and actually are 37 which makes me very happy.

And put one of those 90/180s on the top to see who I can fry and thrive in that condition versus who will fade away and be unhappy.

Which then gave me a bunch of shelves to juggle plants for a while to figure out who likes what level of light and water.

Based on that design I created the grow cave for mid-size plants so they would not waste my space in the tent since that will be filled with the tomatoes and peppers and cucumbers and zucchinis and any other climbers. I don't want to be juggling plants in front of the climbers, and the climbers don't move. That also means I can use the space for the climbers dirt to give them a lot more root space.

Speaking of zucchinis, I have three very nice ones that are currently thriving so I found my happy medium for light and water for them. And yes, I know I should be picking those cucumber flowers. Those are the extra plants that I am growing just for the flowers. I typically have a cucumber flower breakfast. They are yummy. I have isolated the ones that I will be transplanting and keep a close eye on those.

The grow cave currently has seven by 37 watt lights hanging as close as the plants need and/or want. I will put one or two of the 90/180 lights above. I can have a bunch of tall plants in the open space and I can simply stack a bunch more plants at the top level. I will simply buy individual bars to screw in the tops around the whole thing and wrap it with mylar. The lower plants will get the single bars and the open center and second level will get everything from the ceiling lights.

Note on watering. I use 32 oz ketchup bottles to squirt at the base of each plant. I found that's the best balance of volume and control. I will have to come up with an automated watering solution in a bit.

Thanks for the two cents. I actually want the tops more than I want the carrots. So I'm good with random crap giving me a large quantities of greens. That's what I would prefer right now.

When I go outside I would prefer an assortment of colors. Not that I think they have any difference other than pretty. But that's what I want.

I’ve grown a ton of lettuce and spinach under very little wattage. Only trick is keeping it cool. Most I’ve grown will bolt if you let them get above 69F and seem to thrive at like 65F. Even baking in the kitchen too much I caused some to bolt once lol. If it bolts just pull and don’t try to revert in my opinion either. Just replant.

I’ve also done tomatoes and peppers both which were awesome. I know you have yours already but I’d recommend cherry/grape tomatoes varieties as you can really pack in the fruit per square foot.

Tomatoes are really demanding on nutes just like cannabis and will soak just as much light. Same 18/6 veg and 12/12 flower worked great.

Some peppers I read you can make them flower and fruit just based on nutrients (high N I think) but I’ve not done that myself. I was fairly successful with the same lighting flip but they take forever so getting advantages with nutes would be helpful.

I’ve grown a lot of the stuff you’re doing outside so not sure how it’ll go inside. One warning would be the watermelon and squashes like zucchini are powdery mildew magnets. Cucumber too, oh yea. These always have it eventually. I’m not sure it’d spread but I’d be watching those vines and zucchini closely.

And a week later here's what we got so far.

17 tobacco plants that will be 6 ft high and 3 ft wide apiece. Six pepper plants that I hope to bring along, three spicy and three sweet. One serious tomato so far and hopefully a couple of more. I know now that I need to transplant them quickly. Two zucchinis that are taking over my small tent and I will transplant tomorrow. One or two cucumbers. I got lots more but I just don't give a s*** about it. Lots of assorted other stuff but those are the climbers I have to pay attention to.

Lots of basil. And lots of new basil starts because I ordered pretty much every type of basil seed there was. My rosemary and thyme are coming along nicely. I have a marjoram and oregano forests. Tarragon is good. So are the many sages. My dill forest is ass kicking and I eat from it all the time. I clip the lettuce a couple times a week and enjoy in both salads and sandwiches. I've clipped some carrot tops and I'll saute them tomorrow with some garlic and onion and a bit of olive oil.

Lots of education for when I move into the protected outside and the wild outside. Lots of starts for two or three months for now.PXL_20220104_161119006.jpgPXL_20220104_153210652.jpgPXL_20220104_164547078.jpgPXL_20220104_161110404.jpgPXL_20220104_161226481.jpgPXL_20220104_161124097.jpg

Tomatoes are suseptable to Tobacco Mosaic virus so keep separate.
While they will be separate as far as a room apart, let's face it, I smoke. It's probably living in my saliva and will get to them if I sneeze. So if I identify it it will be everywhere anyway. If it goes down badly on this pass I will go mushroom style clean room growing but until then I'm staying relaxed.

No worry's I have had smokers help with tomatoes just a bit of sanitizer .

I also set up heavy ozone generation. I will leave the house for a few hours and that room will be sterilized. I've grown mushrooms. I know how to sterilize a room.

And then this was abandoned with no final notes. Sorry about that. All the grow areas had to be shut down and cleaned out as the house was split into two pieces and turned into an Airbnb in that grow space.

That's okay. I have a huge 34 x 14 shed in the back. It took me a year to have it delivered and get electricity to it. Today I started building an 8x8 tent inside it. It will be a mixture of cannabis and indoor stuff but no climbers. I have a med certificate that allows me to grow 15 cannabis plants. Hopefully I'll never buy cannabis again, once it's flowering. I'll probably start a new log as I go through that adventure.
