Convoy? ..Convoy!

look carefully at that...they aren't landing blows....just throwing arms at chests...
maybe the guy in red is hitting the helmet, it's hard to tell...
You’ve obviously never been in a hockey fight.

and the fact that you had to go to a hockey gif to display Canadian's violent tendencies is telling, when we get the same display of violence from people shopping at Walmart...with no helmets and no pads...

is this person at walmart guilty of bad dental hygiene? , or were they knocked out in an argument over who gets the last can of vienna sausages?
or maybe it was both?
It’s not a contest, Roger. Jeez, you Americans always have to be number one.

That's one way to spin it.

By March, the current surge in cases will be done. An alternative spin is the mandate will not be necessary come March.
You have to admit the timing of the announcement is suspect. I can't be the only one who sees it as a dog whistle. The Ontario Science Table is predicting this wave will be over in Late April Early May.

Or the right wing propagandists knew that this was coming (because scientists/politicians have been saying it for weeks) up and timed this bullshit astroturf movement with about 12 people with trucks in a couple key areas to make it seem organic.

Oh yes, yours was a valid theory.

I just an gave alternative reason, not saying you were wrong. I'm not saying one way or the other, just that the epidemic is subsiding and the time is drawing near for ending the mandate. I'm not all that hard up about mandates anyway. Given information out there (not the fake stuff), I could argue either side of the issue and not be wrong. March 1 seems like a good time to lift it. The mandate is in place until then. Setting policy on something we know so little about is fuzzy science. Can't expect much certainty here.

In any case, it's just for crossing the border. Nobody's livelihood was threatened. If the Canadian trucker refuses, they just take loads within Canada. I know in the US that truckers are in high demand. Isn't it the same true in Canada?

The convoy protest wasn't really about vaccination mandates. It was a right wing political theater. If it was about a mandate, why were there so many reports about menacing and acts against people who had nothing to do with the issue? Why menace healthcare workers?

I agree with LG that the timing of the announcement was an attempt to soothe his base. Dougie has ambitions of becoming Prime Minister one day.

God help us.

OK. I'm not going to die on this hill. Politicians "giving in" to the will of the people if there is no good reason not to. Makes sense to me. Even for asshats like people who support that convoy. We have bigger fish to fry in the US, let this be Canada's scandal.

Let the headlines scream:

"Politicians plot to win elections by doing what sensible people want done"

I guess I'm struggling with the messaging. On december 16th 2021 we capped occupancy for sporting events at 50% when the number of patients in the ICU were significantly lower than they are today. Previously we had measurables and targets. < 5% positivity rates, ICU occupancy rates etc. Now it' just seems to be whichever way the conservative wind blows. We no longer test in this province so we really have no clue how bad things are except for what the hospitals are reporting. They've even taking reporting out of schools.

Truckers are hugely important to our economy. Thankfully 90%+ are fully vaccinated and on the road doing their job.

That would be so awesome. it seems every time things seem to be looking up they slam the door closed on us again. In the past 18 months my partner has been laid off three different time for a total of 10 months. Even six months of stability would be sweet.
With the new virus strain having made its rounds we probably will not need a new action unless something drastic changes.

Oh come now. You know just as well as I that the Right do not listen to scientists or understand the math of viruses.

dangit, how did I get sucked into defending mandates? I did it, not your fault but I feel like I stepped in dog poo and can't get it off my shoe.

I don't want to defend mandates because the science isn't clear. I will speculate that in the early stages of the surge, they didn't know how bad it was going to get and so, perhaps, they over-reacted. Or maybe if they hadn't acted, things would have been a lot worse. One thing I think we all can agree on is bureaucrats tend to make policies that won't get them in the news.

I am not defending this decision. But you asked and I still haven't gotten that shit off my shoe.

It's funny you mention that. DoFo is up for reelection on June 2nd.

He's already started trying to bribe us with our own money

Lol sorry.

I'll be the first person to bitch about lockdowns and I don't know if I believe they work. If you compare Ontario to NY who didn't close their restaurants and gyms, our trajectory was practically identical.

Fair point. I’m probably more suspicious of DF than I should be but he’s been consistently inconsistent throughout this pandemic. The scrapping of vaccine passports is the thing I have a problem with and I think doing so is far from sensible.

Have not followed your lock downs but the steps we took really knocked down Delta when we were in trouble. The difference between the rest of the province who took the mandates seriously as compared the the eastern portion of our province where most of the people were antivax shows the actions had an effect. The flattening of the curve to keep the hospitals from being overloaded rather than preventing people from getting sick that is.

Vaccine passports can also be fairly argued from either side.

Ford seems like a dick from what I've seen and heard of him. Loved the scandal over the snowmobiling and did not like way he shouted down a reporter who asked a question about it. But we had a president who did that. It's a tell that he's weak in the honesty department. Kind of ominous.
