Because if you have tall plants, you wont get penetration to the lowest parts of the plant unless you are frying the tops. It means everything below the canopy is waste since buds lower down will be fluffy and underdeveloped. You can achieve same results with shorter plant obviously vegged couple weeks less. Taller plant does not mean its bigger. If you want artificaly induced stretch buy Far Red bulb and you will understand…

Do you mean negative or neutral? I thought keeping temps at a set value during the first few weeks seemed to help the plants grow stable height in flower under HPS at least. Letting temps drop at night would definitely result in more stretch. Not debating just curious what you mean by negative differential?

Plants definitely stretch way more in flower. I've never had a plant that has stretched more in VEG than in flower unless obviously my lights were too high or something in VEG.

I'm about to throw a Blueberry DJ Short cut away because the thing grows wayyyy too stretchy. It has tripled in size overall since going to bloom..
 
Note that the other variable that has only be alluded to is whether you've got something that's showing sativa traits rather than indica traits. Things that lean sativa or heavily sativa are just going to stretch more.

Being a glutton for failure, I'm about to do a few runs that are sativa. The plan is to do something close to a mainline to keep it low and switch to flower ASAP once it's situated. It may be an abject failure, but whatev. I'm also only going to do 2 plants instead of 4, which is what I've run before, so I can make sure they've got enough space to spread horizontally as well as having room for verticality.

I'll probably lean into the lights a bit more than normal while they're seedlings too...keep the node spacing compact.

I was thinking that cold light off period helps to reduce stretch in comparism with warm dark period. Maybe the point was cold floor and I just have not fully got the point, I have to look into this more deeper… Plants do not stretch or grow or whatever else once they start to flower. If you are talking about preflowering stretch than Yes they are multiplying their size but its still considered as veg phase. Light (especially spectrum and its Blue:Red ratio) is topic for itself when we talk about stretch since it seems to have the second most significant effect, the genetics is obviously the key player.
 
After flipping it's not unusual for height to double + some, I've got pics on the forum somewhere time/dated growing at 1.5/1.7" a day.

I've noticed the most ferocious stretch is during the summer when day and night temps and similar.

There's a theory that cooler nigh temps make them stretch but I don't subscribe to that, I think why would a plant grow less in ideal conditions?

It doesn't add iup in my head though I could be wrong I'm only talking about my experience with stretch.

You should do a scientific experiment with day and nighttime temperatures and their effect on stretch.

When I say negative, that means warmer night temps than day. But you don't want to do that much more than a couple weeks straight or the plants can get pissed off.

Neutral is good too.

It's the drastic changes that really matter. Even if you can keep the temps from rising fast at the beginning of the light cycle helps.
