Creating your own soil mix - advice / recipes

Hi guys!
I wanna make my own soil, but I live in Thailand and don’t have access to all the recommend ingredients like kelp meal. But I do have access to most things, and was thinking about a modified Bruce Bugbee / super soil combo mix. I was thinking something like:

Potting soil, vermiculite, peat, worm castings, azomite (trace minerals), bat guano, neem powder, Mycorrhiza, dolomite lime, gypsum & ???

Not sure what else? Possibly blood meal and / or bone meal. What are your thoughts on this?

Do you think this would be ok for indoor / hand watering? I know Bugbee uses lab controlled environments and drip systems etc. I have a 8x4 tent w 18 airpots in it.

also: what’s everyone’s preferred resource for soil recipes / mixes? I have been checking Bulld A Soil but not sure where else to look.

Hi, all those things work very well. If your next to the coast you can collect your own sea kelp. Purge it of its salts then dry it our. Grind and should be good to go.
I personally like to keep things simple. I use chicken shit, steamed bone meal and oystershell.
Rather then putting worm castings in the soil you will get much more out of it if you make a tea with it.
To make worm tea, in a clean bucket at a air stone, worm casting and molasses. Bubble for a day or until its frothing. It should have a sweet earthy smell when done. If it smells like rotting garbage you got something bad in there and throw it out

I avoid using too many nutrient additives, there's already a ton of organic fertilizer companies out there who are pretty good at mixing what I need.

FOUR-WAY MIX:
This mix is made up of four equal parts - four quarts, four gallons or four liters, it doesn't matter as long as they are equal.

1 part topsoil
1 part compost
1 part perlite (and/or vermiculite)
1 part steer manure

That is my "Original" recipe. I have modified it to read as follows:

1 part topsoil
1 part compost
1 part perlite (and/or vermiculite)
1 half part steer manure
1 half part Earth Worm Castings
And for each gallon (3.78 liters) of complete FOUR-WAY MIX, add1 tablespoon of FoxFarm Marine Cuisine (or any other "High Quality" organic fertilizer at 1/3 recommended strength.)

You can try a “ Non Cook “ option ….

Base mix- 1 cu feet
1/3 compost
1/3 peat
1/3 perlite / pumice or rice hulls

add:
1 cup kelp meal
1/2 cup neem meal
1/2 cup EWC ( earth worm castings )
1 cup gypsum or oyster shell
Myco
rock dust ( azomite or rock phosphate )

I do layered mixes and have a few different versions but I depends on what you can get.

LIVING SOIL MIX

You need to keep a few things in mind before creating your Living Soil Mix. Seasonal factors like rainfall, temperature, and humidity will affect the quality of your Living Soil Mix. You can start by mixing the following products: 1 part Peat Moss, Coco Coir, or Leaf Mold 1 part Compost or Worm Castings (we like a blend of 70:30) 1 part Perlite, Pumice or Lava Rock Now, is the time to add nutrients to the soil mix you can find several options but you need to keep in mind what plant you wish to grow and their nutrient requirements.

SUPER SOIL RECIPE

​ The bottom third of the pot is usually filled with this soil mixture, and the top third is usually filled with base potting soil. As the plant develops, its roots will penetrate this layer of nutrients to obtain the nutrition it needs. Per 30L of soil: 300g Blood & Bone 300g Bat Guano ¼ cup Oyster Shell ¼ cup Kelp Meal ¼ cup Alfalfa meal 2 tablespoon Epsom Salts 50g Ag Lime ¼ cup Azomite

You can plant this recipe the same day you make the soil. Use our Living Soil recipe guide to make a base soil for this recipe. Per 30L of soil: ½ cup Neem Meal ½ cup Crustacean Meal 1 cup Palagonite Rock Dust 1 cup Glacial Rock Dust 1 cup Gypsum 1 cup Oyster Shell Powder

Years ago my buddy in the Cal hills dug a hole and dropped a road-kill deer in it, covered it up and dropped some seeds and dug a small trench to the nearby stream. Some tlc and we had bomb azz smoke! Simple is good!

I would go talk to some local organic farmers if I didnt have access to dry pre mixed fertilizer.See what they do, go from there.
