LOL thats because it's old-school. My old boxer world cup is like that on my old dh bike. You where probably 10 when that was the standard. If @GreatwhiteNorth brings the axle to a good shop they might be able to figure something that'll work. I think there's adapters but I don't know which would work in his situation.
All my bikes with thru axles were threads on one end and a cam on the other.

Those are both close, but not quite. Mine has a straight axle that is internally (not externally) threaded on both ends which is where the screws thread into.

This side is assembled.

This side is missing the screw.

The screw that made the trip. (His missing buddy looks similar)

Just a heads-up that you would probably do anyway. Tighten those two clincher screws evenly. They strip.

Lol.
Problem solved with a quick trip to the hardware store (Shout out to @Laughing Grass).
12x1.5x30 mm capscrew & flatwasher.
Bummer is I needed only about 15mm of threads so the last half hour has been spent "shortening" it with a dremel & cutoff wheel(s). Those things are dainty for that kinda work & I went through at least a dozen - but got her done!
Dinner time now, may take an exploratory ride after a bit.
