Some strains thrive and other strains seem to drown easily. Even when adding perlite they still seem to drown. Any other recommendations on amendments to keep the slow growers from drowning? Sand, moss etc?

If your soil is well-aerated, not compact, then it is likely that you are over-watering. If some of these plants have less developed root systems, they will take up less water. If you continue to saturate a plant's medium that is already too wet you will perpetuate the slow root growth and cause more issues. I would start by trying to let these over-saturated plants dry out a bit more before watering and get some mycorrhizae in there to help promote root growth. A moisture meter could really help you here. Over-watering is one of the most common issues I see, and it can be much worse than under-watering.

I run a very silty soil if you dump water into it it’ll just run right out but if you drizzle it in or defuse it as you water it it takes it up much better. I take some soil and put it in a solo cup or container with a few holes in it and water it slowly and watch the soil start to suck in the water to get an idea of how to water your bigger pots. I use some ocean forest and happy frog as bases for my soils in the past And had to just pay attention to the rate at which I watered to get to retain it right sometimes I’ll water one pot for thirty seconds and water the next one for thirty and then come back to the one I already watered as it’s more prone to absorb the water better after it’s saturated a little bit and so and so forth.

Basically the answer is right there - watering control.

You want the medium moist not flooded. Regardless if thereis perlite or not. “ Drowning “ them is a grower’s error not the plant or medium.

Each plant is different also. Look up dry back methods. Each plant over time will tell you by “ how much time in between dry and wet “ when it needs it.
Lifting pots comparing dry weight to just watered.

Not that hard - same shit with houseplants.

Thank you for all the replies. I will try to water less. The issue I’ve had with watering less is that they still drown, but then some areas dry and other areas don’t. So it’ll drown less but then starve for water in a very short time, but some soil will still stay moist. I do weight the pots and document the time in between watering. My typical watering on a full soak can be around 5-7 days.

Try adding some rocks or clay balls or those expanding water beads but as stated it’s most likely your watering habits. Fox farm is normally not bad right out the bag other than having bugs and either not enough food or too much food in it. I use happy frog and ocean forest with a bunch of other crap added for my veggie garden and it’s works good for that.
you may want to try coco mix as stated above. You can get away with only watering once a day in 3g pots for veg and flower but make sure you get runoff or do multiple watering per day in flower but it works with only a single watering but runoff is very important.

So coco dries faster? Would a 1/3 coco, soil, perlite mix help?
