whats the minimum inputs required in a earth-box to grow the firey dankity dank without buying a premade mix.
ya coast of maine is amazing but I feel like I’m riding with training wheels using it and its somehow equivalent to “being on the bottles” / “being in the bags”. I feel more accomplished crafting a soiless mix from scratch.I guess it depends on what you mean by a premade mix, but you could probably start with:
- 75% organic "potting mix" (like Fox farms, Coast of Maine, etc)
- 25% compost or worm castings
- A few cups of Garden-Tone
And do just fine.
Understandable. You could use peat and perlite instead, that's pretty much all that's in the CoM, they just add a little chicken manure, kelp, and lobster shell for fertility. Or promix hp if you want to avoid buying two different bags. Or use old/spent soil from prior grows and replenish it with more compost and dry amendments.ya coast of maine is amazing but I feel like I’m riding with training wheels using it and its somehow equivalent to “being on the bottles” / “being in the bags”. Can I follow the original Earthbox guide except the part where you make the trench for fertilize and just top dress organic fertilizers?Understandable. Same with the Garden-Tone I mentioned. It has 7 ingredients, but you can always buy the individual amendments separately. As mentioned above Coots mix is probably a good place to start, it's only got 6 or 7 ingredients, as well.
I'm also a SIP grower, I use the growbox which is very similar to the earthbox. Definitely the most fool-proof way to grow organically...
I would mix the fertilizer in from the beginning. I question the effectiveness of top-dressing in a SIP, unless you really dig it in deep, which can be a pain to do, especially if you also follow the instructions of mounding up the soil before planting...Can I follow the original Earthbox guide except the part where you make the trench for fertilize and just top dress organic fertilizers?
basically having mainly peat moss/perlite as my medium with dolimite mix in on top (like the Earthbox original guide) and follow a organic feeding schedule by top dressing every 2 weeks. Also fill reservoir with em1/or labs everytime and Start filling bottom reservoir from day 1.
would this work? The fertilizer I will be using is dr earth homegrown for veg, and dr earth flower girl for flower.
Top dressing works as long as the soil is alive and moist.I would mix the fertilizer in from the beginning.
