that was the one thing i kinda had in the back of mind: the substrate surface didn't look nearly as colonized as some of the tutorials iv'e been following along with.

so do you think with the micropore tape, that some of humidity from my room is getting into the totes? i'm a bit scared to keep the lids off for too long and get contamination. but then at the same time, don't want them too dry either.

I've only done a few flushes, so I'm no expert.
But it looks to me like the top of your substrate should be compressed and flatter..
No peaks and valleys.. They colonize better on a flat surface..

not sure what you mean by the casing layer? i mixed up the grain bag with the CVG recipe. bottom inch or so cvg, then spawn/cvg then cvg again.

I kinda felt like that, too. After reading some more, wish I wouldn't have cased my tubs.

I had a bunch of tubs just lagging. I flipped the cakes over, ending up ditching the liners, and pins in just a few days.

i think that explains the casing layer @Aeroknow mentioned. guess i did that too. so it's "easier" to colonize if they dont' have that layer on top?

I think that is a casing. Some people just mix their spawn and sub, then run it like that. Some put coco or CVG on top.

I’ve never tried the lasagna method so i don’t have any experience with that. Try mixing the spawn and cvg and then set and forget next time. End up with it being flat on top for an even pin set. Assuming you’re dealing with an isolate

From what i gather, a true casing layer, which is applied after fully colonized, was suggested for PE strains. What you are doing is a pseudo casing layer. Not really a casing layer.
I’ve read so much shit and did the pseudo casing layer also, spawn mixed with cvg and then a little bit of only the cvg on top. Supposedly if you leave the exposed colonized grain exposed on top is bad.
I have not found that to be true. I had allot more tubs get contaminated before first flush when i was doing that pseudo casing layer.

so a quick update: we have shrooms! there are about 4 in each shoebox. i'll post a pic later to see if all seems to be going OK.

going camping tomorrow and was hoping to have some (it's a Supermoon too this weekend) but guess i'll have to wait...

Shit if they're big enough they're the best fresh.

The surfaces look good, different cultures colonize the surface differently. Sometimes it’ll be totally white and sometimes it’ll look bare until pins start breaking through.


a real casing is made of peat and verm, using more of whatever substrate is in the tub is jsut called a top layer.

mushrooms have so many genetics in them that you never know what will happen with a particular tub, but overall a top layer will improve things.

Fungus gnats most likely.You could end up with maggots if they lay eggs.

Ya man my PE were giving me blobs all over the surface until I put a fat layer on top and packed it down a little.
