North America was covered in a polar vortex, that ment temps were from -50 to where i am 17F....i have a neighbor that actually bought a POS Tesla, it's a nice car, but when it was 17f here, it was DOA. Chargin station were also DOA, from Texas all the way up to Chi town.......i can see EV's possiblities, they have alot of work to do. At this point you would see an EV vehicle anywhere near the north pole or south pole......
They and a lot of EV still use decades old Li-ion battery tech made for laptops! They went with what they had at hand, but better options are coming automakers and others are betting the farm on dozens of new battery types.

Half of the Uk was called the Dane law at one point and the Normans were...

That’s a lot closer. Beowulf’s tribe were our norhern enemies and at times friends, even a marriage between royals. My tribe’s first king, Finn, is mentioned in Beowulf. My ancestors eventually defeated them. Just like they held back the romans, the spanish, napoleon and for a long time the dutch. All that’s left is a province in NL and some areas in north germany and denmark (which used to be Frisia). One of those small cultures that feel threatened by progress as you brought up a few times. Christian af.

On a similar more relevant note, the best trees we have, old oaks, are dying again. They can’t handle the nitrogen excess. Before it gets to a point where we can re-forest, we have to reduce livestock to save the little we still got. Holland… from the Old Dutch holt lant, literally "wood land"” which in the current state is an absurd misnomer.

Still don’t get the attraction to futurists and prophecies, perhaps you’re going through a Ray Kurzweil period, but thanks for bringing up PF. I’d given up entirely on nature in NL. Now it looks like we might not just save the rest, but restore some too.

better options? That was a new Tesla with the newest battery pack they had....and it was still DOA at 17F, i can't imagine what they are in Chi town....the neighbor i mentioned to me last night,he wants his money back, and he will never buy a EV again.....untill tech get a heck of a lot better, and infrastructure get better, think i stick with my gas vehicle

you can bet the farm all they want, doesn't mean they're gonna get the most tasty egg......

Yet Norway has highest EV share (90% of new cars), before Sweden, Iceland (and NL). Most popular model in those countries: Tesla Model Y. The winters you described in an earlier post is what I miss, how my winters were a few decades ago, when it would not just occasionally freeze at night but remain below freezing point by day and people ended up ice skating on lakes and canals. In scandinavia, lowest temp this winter around -40C/F. Not quite northpole but still.

Don't expect most ICE cars to start at -45C unless they have a block heater and maybe a battery heater too, lead acid batteries are affected by the cold too. Many places have outlets for block heaters up here and in the north central states, a battery heater is not much of a stretch. I expect third party add ons like a propane heater for batteries that runs of a barbeque tank, fits in the Frunk of an EV and heats the battery pack as required. A tank of propane should last a year if the car was plugged in too. There will be innovations and that one is like an old Volkswagen heater vented through the battery bank or heating the pack's cooling system.

okay 1: whats a frunk? 2: old volkwagen had heater channels along the bottom of the body to get heat to the front, no battery bank there.....

It does appear like a Ray Kurzweil singularity, but it might not be as "transformative" as people think. We'll be lucky to get way by the skin of our teeth over climate change. The smell of money in solar, batteries and EVs on the new breeze blowing through the environmental community is refreshing and invigorating too I might add. Green is also the color of money (American), technology and greed got us into this shit and hopefully it will not just get us out, but to a better place. I advocate solving climate change using science, technology, capitalism and good old-fashioned greed.

The front trunk of an EV. A very small propane heater can heat the battery cooling system that uses liquid coolant and a radiator, it can be vented along addon steel channels along the bottom of the battery bank too to get all the heat out of it and warm up the pack. Likewise, an EV can use an electric heater to heat the battery pack using a pump and the same power supply already in place for ICE car block heaters. These can be retrofitted to EVs as kits and expect things like that to hit the market, if cold weather is an issue in some places.

if cold weather is an issue in some places? lets try 3/4 of the US and Canada.....that where this last vortex hit...js....and it's going into the NE and Upper NE now i believe...better get your snow shovel out..it's gonna be a doosey...

I think solving climate change is an urgent problem, but there is cause for some optimism over the coming decade with the now obvious transitions to EVs and renewables with battery power smoothing out intermittent renewables. Solar is the cheapest form of power generation in most places and since solar panels are much cheaper than batteries, build for the winter and shortest day. We can have an overabundance for 9 months of the year that you can do interesting things with, like make electrochemical cement or even small-scale ammonia among other things. Battery storage could be keep to a minimal and there would be backup NG turbo generators just in case. Several studies have shown we can do it with renewables and batteries, without even the projected improvements in solar or batteries and both are dropping like stones in cost.

As for agriculture that emits a lot of greenhouse gases, methane and CO2, livestock farming for dairy, meat and eggs, which could be harder to replace, but what happens if by PF, plant-based meats or culture meats that shrank by 50% over the next decade, an eternity in a fast-moving high tech field as big as biotechnology. Unlike computer science, this is much broader in scope, people working with yeast know nothing about aquaculture approaches and people are fermenting fungi too, not just yeast. Better bioreactors with nutrient flowing through multiple screens or felts of collagen fiber impregnated with several types of tissue cells might revolutionize the cell culture of meat. It is a field worth keeping an eye on, if one is interested in progress on climate change. If we can cut transport and power generation emissions and put a dent in livestock agriculture in a decade along with starting the cleanup of industry things might be much brighter on the climate front in 2035. There is cause for optimism in the field of biotechnology, life produces proteins, that what it mostly does. There are many possible approaches to animal product substitutions from, plant, to fungal, to yeast and to perhaps cell or macro-organism culture or something from the animal kingdom, the fight to replace or mitigate livestock agriculture is by no means over.

North America is not the whole world and climate change is a global issue. There might be better batteries and heaters because few will buy an EV if it leaves you stranded at -35C in the middle of nowhere Manitoba! o_O

Another way of looking at is a better battery that takes up less space and weighs less. Put a 10 or15 HP gas or propane engine/generator in a hybrid and it can generate from 10 to 20 kilowatts to charge the battery and it can warm the battery pack in winter, when it would be used, say its the size of a big bread box. The car can be plugged in and runs 90% of the time on plug in power from home generated using rooftop solar. Propane might be best, if the fuel is gonna be in the tank a long time and a barbeque tank should last a very long time, just change it out at the gas station or convenience store.

Is it green or is it greed, corruption and no government oversight. Why should they worry if the lights go out, they've got the election in the bag with bullshit and culture wars. Besides government doesn't solve problems it creates them especially when it helps people!

I drove big rigs that have a tiny diesel powered heating unit that circulates the antifreeze through the system keeping both the engine and the cab of the truck plenty warm enough at -40 that the engine doesn't need to be left running all night. Much quieter too so sleeping in the truck is much nicer and it generates power to keep the battery topped up and able to run a fridge, TV, fans etc.

Pretty sure similar units can run on other fuels as well.

We are tackling climate change on several fronts and renewables can power everything including EVs. At the same time we are cleaning up some industries like cement and shipping and hope to clean up steel too. Livestock agriculture remains an issue though, but technology might solve that too, but don't sell the farm just yet! We might just make major strides in the next decade to lower carbon and methane emissions and cut our reliance on fossil fuels.

Something small for an EV battery you might just get 10 kilowatts of charging power at 20% efficiency, but the main purpose of the gizmo is to heat the battery so even exhaust gas can be used to make it super-efficient. Propane might be best if it isn't used for a year or two except for test starts etc and a barbeque gas bottle could last a long time, and everything might be automated somewhat. A plug-in battery pack heater would go with it. It might be made as a kit and aftermarket thing it just needs to heat and circulate the power pack coolant, so you can tap into the cooling system at the radiator.

i'm kinda like you....hybrid EV would work better. I think toyota is working on a better version of that now, they won't go full electric for the time being....
Stellantis making the Ram 1500 Ramcharger an EV with on-board gasoline generator is an intelligent way to get more people into EV's. 145 miles powered on batteries alone, and 690 miles with full battery and full tank of gas. The generator is still going to require maintenance like any other engine, but many drivers will be able to go a long time without using the generator to charge the battery.

I wouldn't be surprised to see many more manufacturers use the same concept. That generator should be pretty efficient as it won't need to adjust for load.
