to clarify the last bit of my post, because I don't have a pump or anything, the medium itself has to uptake water and nutrients, and isn't assisted by anything except for it's innate absorption ability. Does this seem like something pure coir can handle?

I dont know about coco as I am doing it for the first time....BUT, i did just do a 100% perlite "hempy" grow and it turned out FANTASTIC :hump:

SICK. That is exactly my setup, I think, except I have 2 gallon pots filled with coco in 20 by 10 trays!

I went to my local hydro store and they were out of normal-priced bags of perlite, and having read that coco was fine by itself, I opted out of buying it.

Unfortunately, after transplanting into pure coco, it seems like I'll have to somehow de-transplant, buy some perlite from somewhere, and re-transplant.

wow, so its nice to see a thread about coco. i cant wait to see the feedback im going to get from all of you guys. ive been using coco for about 3 grows now, and ive seen some good and some real bad plants. i had a partner who was real smart and could grow like no other but the moron took initiative to reuse the coco two times without treating it. SO after the first amazing crop the second was good and the 3rd wasnt no where near the yeild expected. i had 6x 600 watt hps and 75 plants all in a 50/50 mix of coco and perlite. well, since i wanted to settle down i decided to step down to a personal grow and use 2x 150 watt hps with 5 plants. So ive been reading this thread and all ive read is to have your ph 5.5-6.0 but ive always ran 6.3 and havent had any problems besides the coco being off from being reused two times. anyways check out my grow journal and let me know what you think about my setup and how i water. because i use advanced nutrients connessuier and sensi grow at 6.3 ...

omnombudsman i have done what your talking about with both coco and perlite.
they both work.
ive also used perlite/verm at a 3:1 ratio and that worked too.
im just trying to work out if one is better than another, and why.
coco is way cheaper, and so far seems to be as good as anything.

I'm doing coco right now and have about 20-30% perlite mixed in and my babies are doing really well for the 10 days they have been in it. My question is do I still need to throw in a plain water feeding or can I continue on with the nute mix I am using? I've started with AN monkey juice @300ppm or 1/2 recommended dose and have bumped it up 50 ppm every couple days. I'm just not sure if they need a plain feeding or not....I'm thinking so? anyone?

The coco I bought was slightly too coarse I think; also, like a fool, I put my little plants in big pots, so their roots weren't even in contact with the water, blamed the coco when they started to wilt, and bought some perlite. Now they are transplanted in small cups of perlite.

Vermiculite is honestly my favorite so far, but the fact that it rots is really detrimental.

Do you have any other thoughts?

I want to try a mix of perlite and coarse coco again when my plants are slightly larger.

as long as you water to about 15-20% runoff you will never need to give your plants just water to flush. As long as you water the coco regularly and with runoff there will be no unhealthy build up of nutrients. Ever

Awesome posts, I just started using coco, mixed it with expanded clay pellets, an inch at the bottom, a few handfuls mixed in the middle and an inch at the top. I also threw in a few handfuls of foxfarm soil for s&g's. One question though, what is the re-usability of coco, and if so what kind of treatments should be used for it. Ive also been experiencing a pronounced amount of yellowing on the two plants directly under the 1k HPS, mostly the tops, is this from a lack of N or just the plant going through senescense?

i was looking at the canadian express web site. they have an awesome section on coco coir. one of the things they say is that for some reason that i dont get, coco eats N, so you need more in coco than you would normally. anyway there are coco specific nutes, that would probabally be a good start.

its a good read.

I'm using monkey juice from advanced nutrients and its specifically designed for coco. I am about 1 month into a grow and so far so good.

im having problems with my plants for a long time now and i tryed many diferent soil mixes and tap,spring and distiled water and still nothing seems to cut it so now i transplanted a few of m plants in pure coco coir and im watering with 6.3 ,6.4ph here on this site they say u can treat it like soil,i wanted to check this with somebody is it ok
