yield question

OK lets say I'll use a 3,5 x 3,5 grow area and I think I'll grow 4 full sized plants or maybe 9 smaller plants. The dilemma is: which one would be better choice to use 600w HPS or 1000w HPS?:???:

Which one would yield better?
a)4 full sized plants
b)9 smaller plants

And what would be yield per plant for both "a" and "b"?

Does 1000w pointless and waste of electricity?

Hi Icy,

For the light, I'd say go with the 600w because if you are growing in such a small space as you say, 600w will be enough to spread the light adequately to your plants. I think 1000w may be a bit much. Especially HPS, as they have higher lumen output than MH.

As for the yield.. more plants in a small space will mean that the canopies will prevent/stop the light from reaching the lower parts of the plant as much, so you will get lower yields per plant, however the idea is to focus the light on the top colas as this is where the best bud is produced on the plant.

Personally, I'd go with the 9 plant option. This is because you have more plants so if one of them goes bad you have lost a smaller yield than you would if you were growing 4. (thats a 1/4 of your yield!). Also, your final yield may be higher, stronger and in turn more rewarding at the end if you go the 9 plant way.

Peace

if you can handle the heat get the 1000.. you will wish you did after you get a few crops in and want to upgrade your setup.

depends on what strain, what your ventalation situation is like, what method of growing, how long you veg them etc.

if you strictly grew in soil in 3 gallon square pots, vegged them and flowered at about a foot, cut off all the under branches and most side branches for a SOG style.. you could squeeze a pound out if you do it right

400W is perfect for that size. I think the 400 will do everything you need for that size room. If you do decide to go bigger, I wouldnt go any bigger than the 600w.

ive used 1000s for 4x4 flood tables forever, i dont see why it wouldnt be just as good with a 3.5 by 3.5... besides how many growers ever start with a few plants and dont try to upgrade?

thats the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would go with the 1000w and get a nice inline fan you will be happy with that!

Basically.. use any light above 400w.. depending on how much you want to pay for electricity against how much you want that little extra light to your plants!

go with the 1K if you can handle the heat, and dont expect a LB for your first run... the 1Ks are cool, because you will get more than the 600w even if you fuck it up a little ;-)

just watch those temps...

You mean lb from one single plant or from whole area? lol I'm just a beginner

i mean 1 lb from whatever you do... plant numbers arent as important as watts or lumens...

if you have a 1K you'll have plenty for personal use until the next batch comes in...
