Cal-Mag usage in Hydro System

I am on my first grow and from the start it has looked as if I have been deficient on the calcium... My White Widow plants have shown this the worst.

Can anyone give me suggestions on usage rate ? I use tap water now at 140 ppm that has been sitting out to allow the chlorine to dissipate.

What are the positives and down falls to using Cal-Mag?

I am using General Hydroponics Flora series recommended amounts in my systems right now both veg and flower.

I'm using Cal-Mag+ and I've enjoyed the benefits. The directions I got off this forum says to use 7ml per gallon. 5ml equals 1 tsp, so just under 2 tsp per gallon. Liquid Karma really enhances the nute intake also.

Sorry that this doesn't directly relate to your question, as I'm trying to learn more about this product too. But would I need or even want to use a cal- mag supplement having hard water? My initial thought is no, but I was wondering if anyone who chimes in to help would also know if they should or shouldn't use this stuff with hard water.

That's odd; what medium are you using?

Milleniums Cal-Mag Max http://www.wormsway.com/detail.asp?sku=MCM405 is the highest quality you can get. It's 0-0-0, Botanicare's Cal-Mag+ has 2% nitrogen so it can only be used effectively during veg.... very bad for flowering.

You shouldn't need to use cal-mag with hard-water unless you are growing in coco.

I'm growing in rockwool/hydroton with a drip / DWC system... I think the issue is in the DWC side of things..

I use the Botanicare line: Pure Blend Pro Grow & Bloom. I supplement with CalMag, Liquid Karma, Sweet and HydroGuard ... all Botanicare products.

I use the CalMag from rooted clones, all the way through the flowering process, except for the last seven days when at that time, the plants are being flushed out. Have to use CalMag with the Botanicare products if you're using RO water.

In my start-up of my first grow I used distilled water and I think this was a lot of my early issues. I know use tap water with a ppm of about 140 or so... Things are looking much better.

I still want to investigate the Cal-Mag and its benefits and or negatives in my system...

A lot of growers use the Flora series with r/o, no problem. I'd think that if it is truly a calcium deficiency, you'd simply increase the nutrients. @ 140 ppm, the tap water should take care of any calcium deficiencies. Don't waste money on something you don't need.

UF thanks for the input... I think you are correct about this.. As I start my next WW from seed I will take better care and see what happens. My guess again is the start of my system I used Distilled water and this had no Calcium at all in it...

I use RO + 5ml/gal for clones and 10ml/gal for established plants. I believe this is very strain specific. Also, if I don't keep my ph at 5.8, they will still show deficiencies.
