Sometimes less is more. I think you are putting too much hot stuff in your chili trying to make it spicy but instead it's just too hot to eat.
The trick with chili powder is that the longer the chili simmers, the stronger the chili flavor gets.
I use just regular chili powder (maybe about a tablespoon or less), no peppers, or hot sauce, just chili powder, but my chili simmers for a good 8 hours or longer before being served.
Which is what I happen to be making for dinner tonight. I like to have it started no later than 9 am for dinner around the 5 or 6 pm time.
