Bob Goes Vertical

Well I've been wanting to do it for a long time, and I've finally done it. I finally have a vertical grow going. I still have some work to do on it, but its looking good so far.

The cab is 6'x6'x6' with 4 shelves all 14" high. For this first run, I am using a 600watt HPS and a 400watt HPS bare bulb set-up cooled with a 747cfm Vortex fan. I have a 420cfm intake fan and some passive intakes as well. I was planning on getting my carbon filter yesterday, but I went to Vegas over Christmas and over spent, so thats going to have to wait.

The strains I am growing are HGS Blueberry, HGS NL#5, C-99, AK-48, Millenium Bud, and NL x White Skunk. It is kind of weird growing this many strains, but I only had like 3-5 seeds of each strain, other than the C-99 which is from clones. I also have Purple Urkel and Ice, but they are getting flowered this time around. I hope to find a keeper of each strain, but I would be happy with 2 or 3 keepers out of the bunch.

The pics suck, but I will get some better ones up tomorrow or something. The plants are almost 2 weeks into flower. The bud pics are some shots of my last harvest earlier this month. I just threw those in there for the hell of it. Any questions and comments are welcomed.

Bob

Here are some pics with the lights off. I think these are a little better. But I suck at taking pics, and there is barely any light in my room without the grow lights on.

Right now this is a trial run so to speak. I am trying to keep my total plant numbers below 50 including mothers, veg, clones, and flower. Depending on how many plants I can actually fit properly, I may add an extra shelf. If I can only fit like 10, which is what it is looking like, I will add another shelf. Either that, or make sure my plants are a little taller next time so they reach to the ceiling. There is about 4' between the shelf and the ceiling. Some of the plants are like 6"-8" from the ceiling right now.

This is the first time I have grown most of these strains, so there is going to be a major learning curve using a new growing method, in a new room, with new strains. But I am hoping things turn out just fine.

Here are some new pics.

The plants are about 3 weeks into flower here. They are Millenium Bud, NL#5 x White Skunk, Ak, and Blueberry.

I can't remember what order the pics are in, but those are the strains in the pics.:?

What makes this vertical if all the plants are on one level? I thought a vert grow was like a wall full of plants at different levels? Im not being a dick im just confused??? Is it because the lights are stacked vertical?

Thats exactly what makes it vertical.

The plants are almost touching the ceiling in some spots, so the entire plant is getting light instead of just the tops.

You don't need multiple levels to have a vert grow. You can do a vert grow with only one 400watt light in a small 4'x4'x4' space and yeild much more that way than with a flat garden that is like 3'x3'.

I am going to add a shelf this next go around and not let my plants get quite so tall. I am going to have them finish at about 2' tall and I will be able to fit 21 plants in there.

if theres such a big increase in yield than why isnt this method more commonly used? i mean u wouldnt even have to buy a reflector and u just hang the bulb vertical it doest seem like something with alot of work either! is there something im not getting?? whats the hard part? also when the lights are vertical then the lights reflect only on the half of the plant that is faced towards the light whereas when its on top it reaches all colas!!

These links were my inspiration. I also read an article about it a while back in High Times. And if this wasn't an efficient way to grow, there would not be government grants out there to study the potential.

And there are more and more vert grows popping up every day. I made the mistake of spending $170 on a reflector when I could have built this cab and had a much better yield. The guy in the first link yields 2 3/4 lbs per 1000watt light. He uses 3 1000watt lights and hits almost 9 lbs. I should be able to hit 2 lbs with out a problem next go around with only 1200watts. At 2 lbs for 1200watts, that puts me right around the 1gram per watt mark.

There is sort of a cone shape that doesn't get a lot of light at the top and bottom of the room. Not much light comes off the tip of the bulbs.

I harvested 4 of 11 plants the other day. It looks like my yield should be good. I will be harvesting another 5 plants tomorrow and the other 2 on sun.

Next round will have 2 shelves with 21 plants. I hope to be able to quite a bit better yield next time around. I will post some pics of my harvest as soon as I'm finished.

Well I harvested my first crop in my vert setup. I got just under 20oz off of 11 plants with 1000watts.

I was running a bunch of stuff from seed, and out of the 11, I am only keeping 2. So things should go better next time around.

I just finished upgrading my room, well almost finished it anyway. I added a second shelf and I will also be replacing the 400watt light with another 600watt light for a total of 1200watts.

I used the starter trays or what ever they are called for my drainage. In the first pics they are just laid down on the shelf. THe other pics are of it when it is caulked together.

Here are some pics with the second shelf. There are no plants yet because the silicone has to dry. They will be going in on sun.

looks awesome dude! i like the new shelf! another way you could have lined it, they make a thin "countertop" material thats waterproof and easy to clean:) you could line the shelves with that stuff build up a 2"lip and just caulk the corners im just rambling sorry but the new setup looks gravy!!! gonna get huge yeilds from the 2x600 watters!

if you lift up your first shelf 4 inches you will be able to run a row on the bottom, on the second row just train them to bend a bit towards the light, this will ad 35 percent more bud to the same amount of light :)
