So. CA MMJ Patient About to Embark on First Grow

Hi all, my name is Kat. (My username is pronounced "catatonic" for those who are curious; I get that question a lot. lol)

I have the medical marijuana "recomendation" for CA and therefore am legal to grow according to my state. Of course the feds see it differently, but since I'll be growing a very small amount for my personal use, I highly doubt they'll find reason to come after me. ;)

I live with severe chronic pain/fatigue and extremely limited mobility; I'm a good 98% housebound. My current diagnonsense is fibromyalgia, but my docs and I know that I have an autoimmune disease, many of which run rampid in my family. MS his highly suspected, along with RA, lupus, chronic Lyme, (currently undifferentiated) spondylitis, Crohn's, thyroid disease.... any or all of the above, and then some. We're fighting MedicAid to get tests approved; between that battle and the fact that symptoms overlap exponentially between a myriad of illnesses/syndromes that are already extremely difficult to diagnose on their own, it could take years or even decades before an accurate diagnonsense can be established and hence a chance at better treatment & management of my symptoms. (My mom is in her late '50s, and like myself, has been increasingly ill since childhood; it took decades for them to discover that she has Crohn's, she just got a true diagnonsense of Ankylosing Spondylitis a few months ago, and is finally getting proper treatment which has led to a bit more mobility & quality of life! She's the one who is now being my "cheerleader" and reminding me that there is hope and to keep fighting, etc.; it can be all too easy to lose sight of that little light at the end of the tunnel. BLAH!) But pain, fatigue, general illness, being housebound and extremely isolated is simply a part of my life, and I try to make the best of it; meaning I'm not seeking sympathy and especially not pity! Rather, I'm establishing my condition in a bit of a nutshell and getting it out of the way, as it ends up being mentioned sooner or later anyhow. :)

So, my AeroGarden PRO200 arrived today. Although the manual indicates that I should be able to assemble it myself, my 18 yr. old son (who moved back in to be my "care giver" while my fiance is deployed to Iraq until late August) will be most likely doing most if not all of the assembly.

The reasons I chose the AeroGarden, at least to begin growing, are the convenience of having an entire (albeit according to the "grow journal" threads not quite) hydro/aeroponic system that is self-contained and doesn't take up a lot of room, is portable and pretty easy to break down and set back up when moving (as we'll be buying a home shortly after my fiance's return from Iraq), and most importantly a system that I can maintain on my own since my son (who will be helping me learn some of the basics) won't be living with me forever. :-P

I've been reading several AeroGarden grow journals in these forums the last few days.... part of me feels a bit more overwhelmed while another part of me feels a bit more educated before I've even begun. I'm more likely to be found on YouTube, Stickam, or Skype because video viewing/chat is easier on me than typing (my hands are getting increasing arthritic symptoms, and some days typing is very painful whereas other days it's just fine).... this is the first forum post I've made in a couple of years that I can recall! However, this site absolutely rocks between the amazing amount of info and the posting members appearing to be extremely friendly, so I shall type whenever I can as I really feel I can learn a lot from this site.... and perhaps one of these years actually be in the capacity to help other n00bs like myself. :D

Tonight my son and I plan (depending on my pain/fatigue level) to begin germinating seeds, and most likely my AeroGarden will also be set up tonight so that I'll have a few days to play around with settings and get them down by the time the seeds are ready to plant.

BTW, although I've been using MJ daily to control pain and bipolar episodes for over two decades, I'm not well-hearsed with a lot of the "jargon" amongst the MJ "community" so to speak. SO!!! I'm under the impression that I'm using "bag seeds" as they're not purchased; they're collected from what I've bought; is this the correct term?
:dunce: :bigjoint:

Also, I won't be able to purchase additional lights for at least a few weeks, if not even a couple of months.... between a meager disability income and cruddy economy, spending on anything further than necessities for living isn't something I get to do often. However, one purchase I'll be making ASAP aside from additional lighting is a Mylar Grow Tent (photos attached) which will easily fit in my bedroom or the "dining" room which we instead use basically for storage and my exercise equipment. It's also extremely portable and easy to assemble, which again will make it very simple when we buy a house and move out of this gang-infested neighborhood.

My house was filled with beautiful, lush plants for years; I finally gave them away when the neuropathy became too disabling for me to take proper care of so many plants spread throughout my home, but I know my thumb is still quite green. So, although I know there'll be some trial and error in the beginning, I'm confident that I'll be harvesting enough bud to keep myself supplied with my wonderful medicine in a relatively short period of time. (I generally go through an ounce a month, two if I'm in a bad flare/relapse; so I certainly won't need to grow giant plants.) Then, not only will I have the satisfaction of having accomplished something I've wanted to do for years, but more importantly I'll finally be able to stop getting my herb off the streets and know exactly what I'm putting into my body.

(Who knows? Perhaps some day there'll be a "Katatawnic" strain! Oh, I would SO run a grow op for dispensaries if I had the money and the room, etc.!)

ANYHOOO, this post was originally going to be in the "Introduce Yourself" forum category, but since I'm preparing to begin my first ever "mini crop" using the AeroGarden PRO200 and will most definitely be having questions, I figured this would be the place to get my intro out of the way. Two stones with one bird and all that jazz. :-P

Sorry this is so long! I'm a "wordy" person by nature, which is one reason I avoid typing when my hands flare up. LOL! When my "grow journal" begins, I'm planning on videoing a lot as well as taking still photos; they may be posted on my YouTube channel, but my plan is to embed .flv files in a "Grow Journal Vlog" page on my own domain as well and/or instead of YouTube. Not only will this give great visuals of the process, but it'll also bring down my typing exponentially as I can simply post brief updates and provide links to my latest "Vlog" entry. :D

OK, now that I've written nearly an entire book chapter, I shall finally sign off and let everyone's eyes take a rest.... those of you who've gotten this far, I applaud you!

I should be back soon with an update (again, germination is beginning tonight, so it'll be at least a few days before I'm back to yak).... catch you on the flip side, and may the forces of evil become confused on their way to your house! 8)

That's what I'm planning on doing, greenearth5. :) Hopefully my stupid questions will dwindle and successes increase as time goes by, and the sooner the better!

your gunna have a blast..
hope all is well
will be posted!
Thanks, Elove11. Aside from the flu hitting me like a freight train this morning, and finding out via email that my fiance's convoy was hit pretty hard on their way to/from Baghdad (thanks to extremely heavy armor, no one was hurt!).... all else is going pretty well. :)

SO! Already hit my first obstacle: my son assembled the AG, and one of the three lights doesn't work.:cuss:
So today I've gotta call the retailer (I don't want to wait for online support, talking live w/customer support will be faster) and tell them they've gotta send me a working bulb and ASAP.

Seeds still germinating; transferred them from soaking in water to paper towel and all that jazz night before last. One seed has a teensy weensy "slit" and you can see that it wants to sprout.

That's all the progress so far. I want time to speed up, cause "hurry up and wait" drives me crazy. (Patience sometimes isn't my biggest virtue. lol

I forgot to call the retailer, so opted to email them and see if they'd get back to me quickly. I simply said that one of the bulbs doesn't work, and to please inform me ASAP as to how we go about rectifying this issue. Nine hours later, they replied apologizing profusely and said that they'd ship me a replacement bulb immediately; they didn't even ask me to send the dud back to them. That, on top of my AG arriving two mornings after I ordered it with free shipping, already makes me happy with their site's customer service. :) I will be sticking with these guys so long as their service remains reliable and "AG specific" products/parts competively priced: http://www.hydroponic-home-garden.com/

SO! As of this morning, three seeds have very healthy-looking taproots: a papa, mama, & baby bear. :D (I'd photo them, but don't have batteries for my camera & hurt too much to drive just for that, and we've all seen taproots around here anyway.) Eight more look extremely promising, so I'm pretty sure I'll have my seven within the next day or two to begin planting.... I'm planning on starting with all seven, then "weeding out" (no pun intended, lol) the weaklings and/or males till I'm down to three tops; maybe four but I think three are enough RE: room to grow healthy plants.

This evening the three taproots will go into the AG; two lights are enough for just three seedlings, and the remainders can be planted by the time the replacement bulb arrives in a day or two.

I swear I've seen a couple of threads in this forum that had photos of preparing the seed pods (i.e., the best way to cut them, etc.), but I can't find them now to save my life if they are out there. I'm quite good with written instructions, but if anyone knows which threads might have these photos, I wouldn't mind being directed there just to refresh the visual. :?:

I like your sig... I hope the grow goes well... I'll be around the chat if ya need any help.
Thanks... thanks... and thanks! :bigjoint:

I've looked at people square in the eyes with a serious expression and recited that to them (my sig, that is) in a very "casual conversation" way more than a few times.... it's quite amusing to watch their faces as they ponder what the hell I just said, and a great way to find out if others are truly paying attention to what you're saying to them.

Thanks for the welcome! :)

I'll be getting a second AG in a couple/few months, most likely by May. Then once I get the growing down, I can have two separate cycles going at once. It'll be a few months before I'll even be hopeful about keeping myself supplied without having to buy more.... one step at a time, eh? ;)

I'm not sure yet which lights I'll add to the mix. I've been reading a lot the last week or so, taking tons of notes, and all that jazz. Best quality for the buck is certainly at the top of my list of priorities though; unfortunately, semi-retired "club" vocalists aren't rolling in the dough. My next purchase will be the mylan tent before adding lights, because I live in an extremely old & drafty house, and every morning I'm greeted with new dust bunnies. I want my AG to be dust-free and easy to keep clean; ease of use/maintenance is a necessity for me, because I'm physically very limited.... hence my decision to try out the AG in the first place.

Thanks for the welcome Rick, and my fiance greatly appreciates your well wishes. (We just got off the phone a bit ago.) :)

It's refreshing to find a site that seems to be filled with friendly people who are more concerned with helping and cheering each other on than trolling around for ego strokes.

Wow, thanks for that! I had no idea they'd be that cheap.... I should check to see if they're also adequate for my turtles; the "daylight" bulbs they need are so expensive, or else the pet stores just jack up the prices.

So five germinated seeds were planted into the AG yesterday. One most likely will be dead by daybreak: I think the taproot developed a bit too much to be handled; it was sprouted enough to be tender, and the beginning of a leaf is shriveled & dry. There's one sprout that looks like it wants to take root, and another that's beginning to sprout. No visible activity yet from the other two.

Three more seeds have taproots that look extremely healthy and promising. They'll go into the AG tonight. (Two empty slots, and replace the one that I'm sure is a goner.)

I used to grow my own fruits & veggies, and they always tasted better than store-bought. Partially because I was damn good at it, and partially out of the satisfaction I derived from knowing that I nurtured them. I'd forgotten how exciting it is to see my first seed sprout.... this is gonna be fun! :bigjoint:

Three weeks since the first two germinated seeds were planted (I germinated the third plant's seed directly in the AG pod).... there've been some ups & downs, but the ups are appearing to take the lead now. Especially the last four days.

I'm not sure, but I've been wondering the last few days if the rapid drying out of the leaves on the first two plants is due to my having had the lights on 24/0 instead of 20/4 the first two weeks; I kept reading 24/0 until the new AG FAQ thread was created. (I've noticed that there's a bit of an impasse about this; it seems fairly equal between the number of people swearing by 24/0, 20/4, and those who are neutral about it.) All I can say is that once I switched the lights to 18/6 (17 days into the cycle), they started growing new healthy leaves quickly and those are remaining bright green. I really was getting to the point of preparing myself for the first two plants not to make it all the way through, but they're showing lots of thrive now! However, I also added the first nute tab 14 days into the cycle, so of course the sudden thrive could be that. Or it could the nutes and the light hours changing, both.

It's so interesting to see such diversity in each plant! (Remember, these are all from bagseed, so variety is pretty much guaranteed.) Like so many others using the AG have reported, the first two (planted on 2009-02-12) quickly turned yellow and then to brown. I didn't worry about it too much since this seems to be the "norm" with the AG in this forum, but of course I kept close watch all the same. The third (planted on 2009-02-20) has had almost no yellowing whatsoever; it's also the largest and (to the eye) healthiest one.

I couldn't get the camera at a good angle for clarity, but you can see what I mean about the youngest plant currenty being "in the lead".... and considering I germinated that seed in the AG, that would technically make it three days "younger" than the other two RE: how many days of growth according to the dates marked beneath each one. (I hope that makes sense to you guys.... it does to me at the moment, but I'm a lot more heavily medicated the last couple days than I usually am, so I could be speaking Gobble-dee-gook for all I know!)

Speaking of variation/diversity in each plant.... the first one that sprouted (marked "2-12a") is shorter and bushier than the others, and the first leaves were much more rounded than the second ("2-12b") one. (It's also the first, and currently only, plant to show five points on the leaves instead of three like the others.) My 19 yr. old son, who's done a little experimental growing and a lot of research, said he's been told that the shorter/bushier one appears to be more indica, whereas the taller/skinnier ones appear to be more sativa. (It's also the first one to sprout but the slowest to grow, and he's been told that indica is known to grow slower than sativa.) However, that's a guesstimate, and I'm very curious as to whether that one is indeed a different strain than the others.

Here are some comparison photos taken 11 days after planting, for anyone who might know if this is hearsay or a decent guess:

There's not really much more to tell at the moment RE: progress, so I'll end this particular post. I'm going to make three more posts following this one, just with photos of each plant's progress to date. You can see how the leaves on the first two were dying off and then the sudden new growth which has remained happy and healthy. Also the very rapid growth, and so far seemingly great health of, the third plant.

Fingers crossed for all three being females.... not that anyone hopes for that, eh? :p
