the tap root should only be about 5-7mm before planting.
a 1/2" taproot will be damaged before it hits the soil.
1/2" is far to long.
Is this normal or did i fuck something up?

LOL oops i couldn't help it though, cause i started germinating them before bed, and they were that long by the time i woke up the next day... FUCK!

So basically because the tap root was too long, now most of them aren't gonna grow?

no i am not saying that.just be patient.
read this it may lighten your hopes.
read the bit on sprouting but most growers plant when the taproot is 1/4" long(5-6mm).

i actually like the paper towel method if its placed inside a tupperware container. i have found in past experience that cardboard pots arent your best option. they lose moisture really quickly leaving your soil compacted and dry. also, if you dont transplant REALLY early, then the plant ends up growing right into the cardboard and is difficult to remove without damage. but to answer your actual question: if your soil is moist and your seeds are from a quality strain i would hold out for a couple of weeks to see if they break soil. it ends up being worth it if they do then youll realize you shouldnt have thrown them out. hope this helped. peace.
