First Grown! 400W Mixed Strains

Sorry but the first pics you posted are what I usually get 48 hours after cracking the seeds. The 3 week old pics are usually what I see in three days. I would like to wager a guess as to the cause for the difference if you don't mind a low number posting sticking his nose in.

First I think you were fine before you got any advice,.. that's early to be feeding, but now they're probably getting close to the time when you'd start with a really dilute solution anyway. If you didn't let your soil cook after mixing it up, the nutes in it aren't going to be that soluble for the plants, so it's not a bad idea to supplement them in the waterings, but that's more for clones or after a couple of nodes have formed. After mixing, i dribble some water with molasses on soil, and set it aside for a month at minimum. I stir it periodically to get air into it, and it get's really warm while fermenting. Composting generates a lot of warmth. I don't use nutes, except for fresh cuttings.

Anyway, back to the difference. MOST of the time, when I see someone who's plants have barely broken soil in two to three weeks, I figure it's because they planted too deep. Folks sometimes poke their finger into the soil and drop the seed in the bottom of it, cover it up and then sit back for days as it works it's way up through two to three inches of dirt before it finally breaks the surface. From my experience (I'm sure others differ, but my soil isn't the fluffiest), the freshly sprouted seedling grows a little over a cm a day through dirt. Perhaps faster depending on the denseness of the soil and temperature. If you're soil is 70 F or less, and your soil isn't loaded with vermiculite or something, it could take longer. I plant my sprouted seeds about 1 cm to 0.5 inches deep. They break the surface the next day(after one day) and are on their first true nodes the day after that. Depending on the strain, temps etc. for example the ones I just sprouted had two nodes four days after the seeds cracked.

Anyway,.. I was just thinking that could have been what you did. Not many posts on this site give actual planting the seed tips, so it seems to be a common newb error. And it's only an eror because it slows down your growth during the first few weeks. From here out they should take off, and I wouldn't worry about babbying it too much. That makes it too easy to overdo something.
So keep on keeping on, and I hope you have a problem free grow,..

planting a seed too deep would only inhibit growth in the first week after it pops out of soil, unless some other mistake is made. Hundreds of seeds planted here. strait into both soil and rockwool. If you expect your plant to be any taller than 3 ft, you wan't to go at least an inch down when planting.

well i didn't put it to deep and i know that for a fact, cause you could see the top of the seed. I used a pencil and made a cone shape in the soil put the sprout in there and push the soil together. I think the should start taking off here pretty quick. Man i really like this dudes avatar haha.

I didn't say you did. Im guessing there simply wasn't enough available O2 for the roots to take off. Some strains do grow very slowly, like my sensi star for example, :)

Might not have been but they should be good to go now for sure. Everything is set up right, and should be taking off.

hey bro wats up? n e ways make sure ur temps r under 79 at all time just to be safe. and hang ur temp reader/gauge under ur light some how and have it hangig right over ur plants like a quater inch away from the the top leaves. check it like ten times a day to see if ur temps are fluxuating and getttin to hot at times. if there pass 80 degrees then raise the light a couple inches and run the same test again atleast untill u get that ac in there and make things right. happy growing bro!

Well right now the temps are about 75-80 during lighting and about 66-70 at darktime. I am puting in an AC unit this coming week to better stableize the temp, or have a lil more control over it, but right now the temps are pretty normal, or what they should be, because it hasn't started getting to hot yet.

Sweet that will do, they are definantly growing though that is for sure when i checked them today, they were starting to come up more and the new growth was coming out really nicely. It should all be good from here on out.

Pencil tip depth,.. no problem there Droski.

Loadeddragon - I respectfully, albeit only slightly disagree, 1 inch versus a half inch is not much different. I'm not sure how much growth would be inhibited after breaking soil, but I suggested it would take longer for the sprout to break the soil surface after planting a germinated seed. Droski didn't, but if he had planted too deep, that would have added time for his plants to break the surface and that time would be added to the age of the plants making them small for three weeks. They look healthy, so I'm sure they'll be great bud producers. I also believe they'll grow over 3 feet, if the genes allow it and the fact that he didn't plant to 1 inch will only mean they broke soil a day or more sooner than they would have.

Pencil eraser depth which is a common rule of thumb, and pencil tip both put it at about 1 cm. I've heard plant rootdown and make sure the top is visible,.. plant the seed in a depth that's the same as the width of the seed,.. plant with just enough soil to cover it.

Here's a site that says 1/4 to 1/2 inch;
http://www.kindseed.com/tips.asp

And another that says 0.5 to 1.0 cm;
http://www.greenmanspage.com/guides/germination.html

If you google it, I'm sure you'll find a lot of links that say keep it shallow.

More than that and you're just adding to the time it takes the sprout to hit light and develop it's first real leaves, which I'm sure we'd all agree is when the action really starts to happen. I'm sure many millions of plants have grown huge in nature from just dropping from the seed pod, to the surface of the soil.

sorry to disagree,.. and there really isn't much difference in the grow by adding only a half inch to much depth when planting. I've seen more than one newb say they planted at fingers depth, and just wanted to make sure more people realize that isn't necessary.

yeah i have heard 1/4 to 1/2 and inch at the most, but anywho everything is all good, and they are starting to pop up for reals now, they should get going pretty heavily pretty quick

Droski's you've done your homework,.. which leads me to think that it was the aforementioned O2 deprivation to the roots, or just plane genetics. Sometimes Mary, like the female she is, just does things at her own pace no matter what you do.

Haha yeah she can be stubborn i know thats for sure. I'm just ready for hear to be about 3 or 4 ft. tall so i can start flowering, and see these pretty girls.

Yeah i know, and I will have plenty of patience with them just want them to be big enough for me to love on haha, and give off positive energy to. I like to sit and talk with my plants and see how their day went. If any bad bugs were messing with them, and how their school work went. haha, naw but really its gonna be great, can't wait.

LOL,.. I can tell you're gonna be a great grower. Wait till buds start popping out all over the place and you'll start singing opera to them.

I'm growing white widow too,.. De Sjamaan,.. I've got three about a week into flower after 40 days veg. They had huge preflowers(actually started budding) before I even switched, and now there are little popcorn sized buds all over them. The space I'm using at the moment is a little cramped but I'm surprised they're so hearty. It's a great strain,...

Yeah, i am looking forward to that one, All of them execpt the Super Silver Haze should be done after 8 weeks of flowering but the SSH will take about 11 weeks, but it will be worth the wait i know.

What's up brother?!? I'm so excited that the little girls are showing a plus development, so far this has been an excellent experience and I hope the end result is phenomanal!!! The roots should be spreading out nicely and should definately be healthy from the way the feeding has been going!!! Let's keep up the hard work!!!!
