First Grow: Greenhouse Vert Racks!

Hello all!

First time growers here, and our first post here as well, although we've learned a *lot* from this forum and hope to contribute a lot in return.
Figured we'd show our grow for you all, and I will do my best to keep this updated weekly.
We've studied quite a bit, but we're still working out the kinks here and there, and learning every single day.
Here's the basics of the setup:

  • Greenhouse which gets a good amount of sun, measurements are 11.5'x6.5x7, and we're only using around half of it length wise. Could easily fit another set of racks in it.
  • 600 Watt HPS for anything that isn't receiving enough light throughout the day.
  • Vertical Racks made with 4'x6' plywood and 2x6's.
  • Oscillating fan & air purifier for intake, old school box fan for exhaust .
  • Black Gold soil in 2 gallon pots, hand watered with FloraNova nutes.
  • 30 plants of the following strains: White Widow, Grand Daddy Purp, & Lavender. :hump:
All vegged for 1 week then switched to 12/12, they're now on day 7 since the switch, and everything is going pretty smooth.
The clones weren't in the best condition when we received them, but you wouldn't believe the budget we were stuck with to get this going. The next grow will definitely be hydro, and hopefully we will figure out which strain(s) work best with this system. The whole setup was built on a budget of under $1000, including *everything*, not sure of exact numbers right now but will try to figure it out later. As you can see from the pics I'll include below, it ain't the prettiest, but we threw it together pretty quickly and very cheap, but we did the best with our budget and what we could find at the time.
Thanks for stopping by, any and all feedback is welcome, we're very new at this and strive to learn anything we can! :bigjoint:

Couple things I should of mentioned,
how we manipulate the light cycle is by turning the light off and covering the entire greenhouse in black 6 mill plastic and simply uncovering every morning, it's a pain.. but will be well worth it. Also, as you can see in the pictures, we placed the largest plants at the end of vegging at the bottom, followed by the smallest in the middle, and the medium sized ones at the top, although this may change soon as the GDP's on the bottom are growing something fierce and may soon block out light on the middle rack. Oh, and don't mind the 90* thermometer in one of the pics, it stays between 70-80 usually but we had to kick the fans off temporarily.
Any suggestions on how to improve this setup(with a strict budget in mind for now :-|) would be greatly appreciated! bongsmilie

Very interesting setup. Quite the irony that the 600W of HPS is the complement to Mother Nature herself. Then you take into account the efficiency of a vert grow and it's beyond genius. Subscribed.
Not to hijack but on a side note- what is the argument against a vert grow? If you have the space I would think it is foolish not too.

Thanks a lot guys!
As far as arguments against a vert grow, I honestly can't think of any, at least not at the moment.. As long as you can keep it cool, and funny thing you mention space, because a vert grow is more efficient there as well. ;) I believe we could of done a whole lot more interesting things with this setup had it not been for the very tight budget.

At the end of week 2 of flowering and the girls are looking sexy as all hell!
We had a battle with mites this week, they came on strong and fast, but I believe we will have them under control by next week.
It's also getting a little hotter during the day, so we plan on installing an A/C in case the temps do start to get out of hand.
We're also tying the bottom ones to keep them out a little from the middle ones, which aren't looking so small anymore.
Everything seems to be running pretty smooth still, and the growth is vigorous. :hump:

The more the merrier! Glad to have you along.

Here's my attempt at a comparison pic!

Not very good with pics, but I think you get the idea. We are so pleased with how things are going so far.:grin::grin:
Anyone know if there is any way I can enlarge the pic a little? I'd like to keep doing these week by week comparisons.
yes very nice so far! you will do well!! +rep

Thanks so much for the rep and the kind words everyone, we appreciate it.:wink::grin:

Rdecosta88, since we only veg for 1 week, and since we had such an extremely tight budget of under 1k for *everything*, we had to stick with just an HPS for now. :) Btw, send me a PM with whereabout's in Northern Cali' you're located.. We're smack dab in Central Cali' here, and have a beautiful GDP mama growing. :joint:

Nice man, looks like they are coming along. Look a little stretched, but great usage of space nonetheless.

That has to be the ghettoest light hanging I've seen since mine last winter. haha keep it up man.

Dammmn onnly 1 week? Thats a ton of growth.
