How far should bulb be from plant?

I'm using a 1000watt bulb...how far should I keep it from the top of the plants? Thanks!

hold your hand under it for one minute. if you can keep it at that distance without burning yourself your plants will be safe.

so have it high enough to where i can bare it or raise it a little higher to be safe?
