Wick system troubleshooting

I recently put together a wick system and would like any advice or experience in using and operating one of these.
I used a rubbermaid for the reservoir, 4 one gallon pots, and a mixture of gravel and perlite for the media. Nylon ropes running through the middle of the media in a U-shape to both ends in the reservoir.
I have never grown in "hydro" system, either passive or not, and I thought this would be a good place to get some experience. I searched and found a few threads(thanks to AL B. Fuct), but could not come up with much more than the basic construction guide.
Would anyone be nice enough to help or lend advice to my setup and the nutrients, water changing for cleanliness, and other things one should know? I am using a 1000w mh, with the warm halide bulb. if i can make this work, I would potentially make 4 more like this, in a space that is 4x4x7. A sea of green is what I would like the end result to be. Any help is appreciated, Thanks

well, thanks for all the great help everyone, I will remember you in my prayers.

I have put an air stone in the water to oxygenate it. Thinking fish tank ph additive to make water right.

Passive wick??? You were right with the Bueller comment, you're in the '80s! Get with the times man, passive hydro is nothing compared to a simple ebb and flow system. Instead of using old technology that doesn't maximize efficiency or yield, invest just a little time and money into a simple ebb and flow hydro setup and your results will pay off. Leave the passive wick bullshit in the '80's with the neon colors and bad hair. Good luck! :)

Does that mean it will work? Or were you making a statement of some kind?I chose this to try and gain experience with a nonsoil grow. I was at a major horticulture university for a horticulture lab and saw wick systems production firsthand. If you have experience with this please feel free to comment, if not, then you are just talking out of your ass
