sounds kinda dumb but this guy at work and i were talking and we ended up talking about cats, and he thinks they dont and i think they do.(like...does your cat love you? or is it just natural instinct that makes em social?.....thats the best way to phrase it

You cat would start to eat you if you died and it was hungry.

If that's not love... I don't know what is.

lol, my cat likes to come up and start giving me backrubs when im on the couch or he licks my hair when im sleeping.....cats are great, im not very fond of dogs though....live on a very busy road and 4 different dogs of mine got hit(broken chain, collar came off, and snuck out and took off.....thats how they all died)

Cats definetely prefer certain people over others, and I don't know how to explain that other than they do feel some sort of emotion toward people. My cat for example, will go and hide if someone it doesn't know comes into my place. On the other hand she gets all excited and 'cuddly' when either me or my girlfriend comes in, or anybody else she's comfortable around. I don't know if that warrants love, or just trust but the cat is making it's own decisions about who it lets near it.

I've heard many stories about dog's mating for life, and when one dies the other is highly melancholy and sometimes refuses to eat... staving itself to death rather than living without its mate. I don't know if I'd call that love. Some say love doesn't tie you down -it sets you free.

Some trainers have taught their pets to sound-out human-like phrases("I love you" is a popular one). Do these pets know what they are saying(doubtful)? My conclusion is they're merely learning and performing an action for the reward.

I definitely think animals are capable of feelings/emotions very similar to, if not love itself.

I dont know why someone would think that any animal didnt have some kind of feelings towards their master. I dont think its love like us humans feel but its something. I have a chihiuaua and he totally seems to love me more than my other two dogs. I am still the master, pack leader if you will for the other two as well.

Cats absolutely have the capacity to love. I have one cat that 4,000% loves me more than anything else in her universe. I look at her...not even touch her...but just look at her and she starts purring. If I actually pet her...she purrs like a machine and has the ability to purr for as long as I can pet. I've tested this...I poop out waaaaaaaaaaay before she does. She'll look at me...right into my eyes...and I can feel the love coming off her in waves. My other cat? Not so much. Every now and then he'll come up to me early in the morning...plop down near my feet and show me his belly. So I'm his master...but it's nowhere near the affection level of the girl cat.

damn it, i just remembered all the cats ive had and how much i loved the cats.....my family cried more and were upset for when our fav. cat died than when my one grandpa died, and i now i just thought of another thing thats really sad/depressing....the cats i have now doing....ones 17 yrs old (we thought she was gonna die soon for the last 4-5 yrs. but she's doing good now again) one 8yr old cat and one 5 yr old. maybe we should make this thread into cats in general...cuz i like talking bout my cats(and plants too lol)and i know lotsa other people do too

how about cats in the wild(lion, puma, jaguar, cheetah, tiger etc)? then again though love is so hard to define and i think it all comes down to wether animals think like we do or not....but its so hard to define thought.....instincts are thoughts, i just realized that.....but im gonna stop here cuz its kinda trippy trying to define thought and instinct and love and their relation . animals that are social animals (deer, turkey, cows, bison, elephant,,people, lions etc) do i think

Just so you know when any animal "head headbutts" you they are hugging you. All animals do this to those they love. Cats and ALL animals love. There are many storys I could tell you but Ill just tell three.
A friend of mine had a realy neet dog. She was kind of a funny crazy dog. One thing she would do is jump into rivers and chase rocks (she thought that if they moved they where alive). We where good friends but I lost touch with them for some years. Yet years later I happened to be on a install job talking to the client when my old friend heard my voice and although at this stage she could hardly get up at all she came right in and came straght to me and headbutted me (huged me). She died a few days after that. She still knew my voice and knew my love for her and she knew her love for me after years she never forgot.
I have a friend who has a very nice cat named Princess she is very old and very silky black. We are good friends. When ever she hears my voice she stops what ever it is she is doing and comes to see me. She can tell I love her and that is something all animals know (when someone loves them) I rented there small guest house next door and have not lived there for years but I still work there every so often and every time I do she comes running. If animals dont love they wouldn't know when someone loves them but every animal I love knows it very well. I know that animals "GET IT" ( probably better then most people) and the animals seem to know I know and I have had many many animal adventures in nature or in the citys that prove it. (most you would never believe)
Ok one last story there was a lion that was hurt and dyeing when this woman found it. She carefuly took her time to make sure not to scare this hurt beast but she made sure to take the time to help it and she did help it. She fed it and help heal it and the lion understood what the lady was doing so it fell in love with this woman. The lady finally got the lion to a place setup to help lions and for many many years she never saw her friend but she never stoped wondering how she was. Well as fate would have it (got to luv fate) one day soooo many years later the nice lady was visiting a zoo and she was visiting the lions looking closly through the bars (allways looking for her friend) and there are pics of this on line, a lion jumped right up at her and put her paws through the bars and grabed this lady by the shoulders like it was going to kill her! All the people around her at the zoo screamed in terror thinking the lady was about to die but the lion just wanted to hug and kiss a dear friend whom she has missed soooo badly for sooo long! Now if that ant love I realy dont know what is!!? Peace!

From what I've observed over the past 5 years from my neighbors cat who adopted me into her life I would have to say 'yes', most definitely.

When I'm feelin down my(neighbors) cat will knock shit down to nuzzle me to make me feel better lol.

yeah, animals prefer not to fight as long as your nice to them they wont hurt you...thats funny, everyone all "oh my god its gonna kill her" the zookeepers and that look of panic/shock on their faces is funny as hell as long as no one gets hurt that is.
we kiss so i'd say its more like a kiss when they come and rub their face across mine.....my cat pets me alot of times....he just comes up and starts rubbing my shoulder or arm or leg petting me when he wants me to play with him lol.

Here is a story about the love of another animal...the elephant.

In 1988, Steve Jennings was on vacation in Australia after graduating from Southeastern University. During a hike through the Outback, he came across a young elephant standing with one leg raised in the air as if it was in pain.

The elephant seemed distressed, so Steve approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant’s foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Steve worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.

The elephant turned to face the man and, with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Steve stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Steve never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Steve was walking through the Atlanta Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Steve and his son Nicolas were standing. The large elephant stared at Steve, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Remembering the encounter in 1988, Steve couldn’t help wondering if this was the same elephant. Steve summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder.

The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Steve’s legs and slammed his dumb ass against the railing, killing him instantly.

Probably wasn’t the same elephant.

you pretty much sum up my response nicely, except the loving cat is a burmese i've had for 15 years, and the other is a 15yr old siamese, who'll love, but only after 25 minutes of danger checks, she's a little dappy now she's lost her hearing and partial sight. the burmese on the other hand will swing on door handles to get into your bed, will still drag a freshly caught rabbit carcas across my white carpets to get a cuddle and some praise, she's a warrior!

animals show love and affection absolutely some species more than others. cats show love and affection but not to the level of most dogs i have had quite a few of both growing up. many dogs i have had would without question give there lives to protect me thats one of the greater forms of love imo.

my cat use to bring 'gifts' for me they would be left unfortunately on my bed. sometimes whole animals sometimes just an organ that also shows love and purposeful action on the animals part.
