Rhino's in the wild & scrogged indoors

So, I decided to start my own journal rather than posting in everyone elses... although that is what a forum is for right??? Anyway here goes.

This is my 2nd attempt at growing. First time was indoors with some good genetics under flouros. Very big learning experience, and I unfortunately did not document any of it. I read many posts on here before making my mark and I would like to thank RIU for a community like this.

Now for the fun part. I started to White Label Rhino seeds back in February, took about 50 clones and kept the survivors... about 15. (not enough perlite in soil mix). I now have 6 clones outside varying in height from 3 feet down to 8 inches. 3 footer went outside 6/02. The other two larger ones a week later. The smaller ones all went out a week ago.

Additionally I am gonna scrog 3 others indoors just to understand the concept better.

Now that all of the background is outta the way, we can get to what people wanna see... pictures!!!!:bigjoint:

Dr. thanks for stopping by!! glad your along for the ride

Just some more background for those who are interested. The outdoor gardens are in sandy marshy creek bank that floods every 10 years or so. The vegetation surrounding the gardens is nearly 12 feet tall and has only been growing for appx. 70 days now. Summer has been warm and wet feels like a tropical rain forest every time I go and check them. I mixed in some organic blood meal in with the soil when they went out, and I haven't decided when or if I will add a bloom mix. All suggestions are welcome!

I have to give credit to RIU member "Natmoon" for my indoor concept. I used the airbasket design for my first grow and loved it. So I am trying again this time with a 3 plant scrog. Same cuttings as outside just a few weeks behind. I am up in the air about ordering an HPS for flower....pretty sure I am gonna stay with flouros just for the challenge and to test the idea that flouros with a flat canopy will be as effective as single HPS. We shall see... I may start an HPS vs. flouro battle here and that is not the intention... I just like the challenge of growing with a $10 light

If anyone who stops by has any suggestions for next year, I am looking for a monster sativa, something that will reach 10 or 12 tall, If I can time the growth right I can stick it out when all the native vegetation starts and let everything grow together, that would be ideal. I was a little unprepared this year and ended up having to clear areas after the native stuff was 2 feet over my head already. It would provide great cover as this stuff is like walking through a forrest of bamboo just easier to break down. I currently have some white widow and belladonna seeds in addition to the rhinos. Pics after a few days of sun:hump:

If I could get lucky enough to catch Fdd2blk's attention to this thread I am sure he could lend some words of wisdom, between him and O4ausername I don't think I have ever seen bigger "trees". Check out their threads...unbelievable!!!

Ok, so the outdoors have to wait but doesn't mean we can't take a look inside. Placed screen in yesterday to get a feel of how they react to it. I will probably raise it another 3 inches just to make watering easier. I know you are supposed to wait till screen is 60% full, well I am pretty much there cuz of the 3 plants, so I am planning on flipping the lights very soon. Not too sure how this is going to play out:wall: but we will all get to see.

So I told myself I was going to wait a week until I went out to see my girlfriends again but I decided to make a trip to try and get rid of the deer who are keeping an eye on things.

Got some peutrified egg solids mixed in with some garlic other stuff and sprayed the hell out of the perimeter and plants. Supposed to do that once a week for 3 weeks to train the animals to stay away. We will see how it goes.

Enough of the blabber... heres the photos

Awesome! I will take some out with me next time I visit. I'm trying to wait atleast 5 days before I go out there... Like to see the progress in leaps and bounds

Ok, so my original plan to scrog three Rhino's together has been changed to only 2. I reverted the other one back to 24/0 light cycle so I don't have to waste another set of seeds and I know this is already a fem.

I was cruising through here last night and saw that someone reccommended putting the scrog on casters so that it could be removed from the area to watered and maintained easier. Well sure enough I had a mechanics creeper laying around my basement and voila! Scrog on wheels!!!!

Switched the lights on 6/21...they are starting the stretch...will have an update on the outdoor patches either tonight or tommorow...trying to prolong my visits as much as possible

Thanks doc.. I am going to make this post hoping to cause a stir and see if someone can confirm or deny this claim.

I bought Jorge Cervantes Indoor/Outdoor Bible a few months back and have read the whole thing through... more than once. I am particularly interested with the artificial light facts the book contains. These are the main things I took away from the reading pertaining to marijuana and how it uses light.

First...Forget about power ratings... all that tells you is how much money it will cost you to keep your lights on. 1000watt = 1Kw =.11 cents in most areas

Second... lumens are important but not the sole statistic to base your lighting decision on. The Color spectrum is also very important. Plants only use certain wavelengths of light for photosynthesis. Therefore using a ton of lumens of the wrong wavelength is like shooting a steel door with a million wooden arrows. Finding a light source that reproduces the wavelengths plants like is important. The research I have uncovered show that Flouresecent tubes, and LED are the best at reproducing these specific wavelengths.

400-500nm is ideal for vegatative growth while 650-750nm are ideal for flowering cannabis plants. So plants are using light between 400nm and 750 nm. Photosythetic response is greatest between 600-700nm +/- 25 nm. Flourescent tubes actually compare very well with HID lighting when reproducing these specific wavelengths.

Third...light distribution over canapoy. so that all of the plant material receives equal amount of lumens is important to maximizing how efficiently a plant will photosynthesize. How you distribute those lumens is very important. If the bulb must be raised because of heat issues and 1 main branch that is outgrowing the rest... then light distribution is very uneven. I know reflectors come into play and redirect light...but if it comes down to only 2500-5000 lumens falling on most of the canpoy. 1000 watt HPS produces only 2500-4000 lumens at 3ft. If you can get it as close as 2 ft it is only 5500-8000. I have never grown HID but I am pretty sure it is hard to keep a 1000watter that close to a canpoy especially one that is uneven.

So here is the debate. T5 HO bulbs pump out 5000lumens each and can be bought in many different light spectrum ratings. I have never used T5 so I cannot vouch for how warm the bulbs get... but my T8 bulbs putting out 3000lumens each can touch foliage for hours and not burn the plant.

I am a little baked and I am losing my focus, but to wrap it up. Using SOG or SCROG technique to keep a flat canopy I am wondering if there might be a benefit to using flouros...Cost is much cheaper tan HID.. replace 1 tube at a time if need be...more work required to train the canopy to stay flat but much less power consumed and less heat generated.... definitely not for commercial growers...just maybe a new way for the hobbyist or someone on a low budget to grow....

Please comment!!!

Looks good but if I can make a recommendation, you should start weaving those girls through your screen, that's really how you get the benefit of scrog. That way you can keep the canopy as flat as possible. Just take your longer branches and weave them out further from the plant(over and under and over and under and so on) then take your shorter branches and let them come up through the center of the plant, filling in the space that was once the longer branches. Hope this helps.

THC thanks for the advice bro. I wasn't quite sure if the screen just held them down until they started popping flowers and then stretch through. I will make sure I take the longer branches and weave them through like you said.

Just a side not: I am currently pursuing a graduate degree in Instructional Technology and this forum is actually a very efficient form of instruction. Expert advice can be distributed on a global level and in a real time environment. And the information is stored so that any user may access any content from anywhere. Really amazing stuff as I am starting to learn.
