neversummer's 2nd Grow: Cabinet DWC - Super Lemon Haze, White Widow, Master Kush

It's begun... seeds are being germinated using wet paper towels and some small containers. I have them in my utility closet which is dark and around 70 degrees.

I also need to go out and buy another air pump. My current Tetra Whisper for up to 60 gallon has two air outputs. So I figured I would run one straight to one airstone, and y-split the other to go to two other airstones. Well the two airstones with the y-split isn't quite cutting it, I want more bubbles for my girls.

I expect to have the seeds in rockwool and in the hydro set-up by Fridy night. I plan on going with 20/4 lighting. Went with 18/6 on my first grow and wanted to see the differences, if any.

Both apparently are by uncle ben... he get's heated in the second thread for not getting credit. That's why I don't take posession of ideas... especially if it's a good one, becuase everybody is going to take it. Aint life better when you share anyways?

Oh... and one thing about this method... it only works from seed. You can top a clone, but it won't behave like it's 'supposed to'... not perfect 2, 4, or 8 colas.

No need to google it. Uncle Bens Topping method is right here on RIU
Thanks bigbrew... I came across one of them last night and was reading until 1:30AM... and coffee was my best friend at work this morning.

I will def be doing Uncle Ben's Topping technique... will do it to all three plants. Why settle for one main cola when you can get four?

There's a fimming guide from M blaze thats good. Also there's newer fimming tutorial thats real hands on and specifically shows u where to cut, but I cant remember who wrote it.

A "short" (so i'm a bit wordy) update. It has gotten a whole lot colder than expected and when I check in on the seeds yesterday evening, I realized my utility closet was below 65 degrees and the seeds didn't even start cracking yet. In my first grow, the Master Kush started cracking within 24 hours, but my utility closet at that time was 75+ degrees. So I smoked a little and started brainstorming.

For those of you who live in areas with seasonal weather... ever notice how trees, flowers, bushes, etc all seem to start blooming if we get an 80+ degree day even if it's only in March? Well I decided to get a space heater and bump up the temp in the closet to 75-80 degrees. What do you know, this morning, the Master Kush and Super Lemon Haze all started cracking, you can see the tap roots. The White Widow showed no signs at all, so I threw another seed in the container, just in case. We'll see how much the tap roots grow today, but good chance that at least the Master Kush and Super Lemon Haze will be placed in the hydro set-up tonight.

I got my pH meter and TDS/EC meter yesterday!!! Ordered from eseasonsgear, free shipping, and only took 4 days for the item to arrive. Can't complain about that. But the Hanna pH meter needs two calibration points and I only picked up some pH 7 solution. So I'll be running to my local hydro shop after work today to pick up some pH 4 solution as well.

I've been doing a lot of research on the SLH and it it sounds like most people are finding their girls growing to about 5-7' tall... def way taller than what my cabinet can handle. I don't think the LST and topping is going to cut it, so while at the hydro shop, I will also be picking up some Humboldt's Bushmaster for $27. That gives me Humboldt's full lineup... Gravity, PurpleMaxx and Bushmaster.

Low key tonight working on the grow, so expect some updates tonight.

yeah, i did some research on fimming and it scares me a bit. for those of you who aren't familiar with fimming, it basically stands for "fuck i missed." well bigbrew, i have a feeling if i attempted fimming, people would have to rename my effort to firming... fuck i REALLY missed.

subscribed, good luck man you have a wicked set up there
welcome to the gang hookedonchronic and thanks for the compliment.

I think you should go with LST. Start it as early as you can, and maybe start flowering a little earlier than you did last time? With all the products you have now, im sure you'll be getting some super dense buds, and high yields, regardless of how big you grow them.

I 1000% agree (yes one thousand, haha). LST as soon as possible, and my Purple Kush plants are a testement to the last statemet about getting super dense, high yeilds with help from the products. Those little plants were vegged for 3 weeks and only had 60w of flouros through veg and the first 3 weeks of flower. Between the Bushmaster, the Gravity, and it being my second grow... the buds turned out rock hard, super dense, and for the size/ time the plants were/ took, the yeild was much higher (adjusted you know).

Plus just things like understanding light penetration better will help a lot.

One thing I've leaned the hard way... Undergrowing is much better than Overgrowing. Do it too much and you end up with 3 times the buds, but most of them aren't very good... they take longer to trim becuase they are fluffier, plus there is more to trim. Much better to have less buds but better buds.

Been plenty of progress over these last few days.

:leaf:

Master Kush - Seed cracked on Friday, transplanted to DWC on Saturday morning, first true leaves sprouted today.

Super Lemon Haze - Seed cracked on Friday, transplanted to DWC on Saturday morning, the little girl has sprouted and trying to shake the seed shell.

White Widow - One seed has cracked though the tap root has yet to really grow. The other seed has yet to crack. Hoping one of these will be ready to go by tomorrow.

Here's some other pieces of info and things I worked on over the weekend:

Reservoir - Purchased an additional 40 gal Tetra Whisper Airpump connected to the SLH reservoir. The 60 gal Tetra Whisper airpump is connected to the MK and WW reservoirs. Using 14" airstones.

Using 3.75" netpots filled with hydroton. Sprouted seeds placed in rockwool. I soaked the hydroton in pH adjusted water and soaked the rockwool in the same water in the reservoir.

The reservoir water pH was adjusted to 5.5. I also added a little of GH Floramicro, about 2.5 ml per gallon. This minimal amount won't kill the seedlings and gives them a little energy to get started. I also added Hygrozyme, about 8 ml per gallon.

I'm using plastic food containers as humidity domes for the seedlings.

Lighting - The lighting is currently set on 20 hours of light, 4 hours of darkness. 250W bulb is about 16" away from seedlings. CFLs are a little lower and I intend on lowering them further.

:leaf:

Regarding the height concerns. I picked up some Humbolt County Own's Bushmaster so the height problem should be solved.

I do still plan on topping to get 4 main colas, and then LST'ing those four main shoots. With these two techniques plus Bushmaster, my height concerns about the SLH is now nullified.

I'm totally stoked to be going through this all over again. I'm just as amazed this time around as I was the first time. But I appreciate it so much more this time. After knowing how the final plant looks, it's amazing to see what they start out as. Going with the good karma, I want to name the girls again... so I have some brainstorming to do.

***Update, 10/5 12:30 AM - Since I will be out of town these next couple of days, I decided to throw the White Widow seed with the sprouting tap root into the last reservoir. Hope this will help her out a little since she's falling behind a bit.

Here are some pics:
1. Master Kush
2. SLH
3. The whole set-up.

thanks for the feedback stew and jigs. the height isn't a concern anymore now that i forked up the dough for Humboldt's Gravity. so like the first grow, i still plan on veggin for 40-some days.

jigs, after going through my first grow, i totally agree with you about undergrowing versus overgrowing. hoping my bud turns out as dense as yours with the new line-up.

Hey whats up neversummer...... I am a new grower also. I just started on my first in my small coat closet. I will be building a grow box for my big closet this week because I can't control things like heat and fresh air easily the way I can with a grow box. I will be building a design something similar to yours except with wood. I think I will buy a light fixture like yours also. I currently use 8 42 watt 150 equiv cfls. Does your fixture use a lot of electricity. I am trying not to have ridiculous electric bills but still use the best for my plants. I am definitely subscribing to this one and will follow for sure. Also can you use those humbolts stuff for soil grows.

yo seemeat420, welcome aboard man. just some guestimates since my electric bill fluctuates month to month. with the following set-up: 250W Agrosun bulb, four 23W CFLs, 1 airduct fan, 2 small fans, and 1 60 gal Tetra Whisper airpump. while going 18/6 lighting, the bill increased by about $10-$15. again, that's just a rough guess, but basically, it won't be anything astronomical like those who do large rooms.

as for humbolts, i believe it was actually made for soil. the directions on the back all provide feeding instructions for soil.

would love to see your project.

Thanks man. I will definitely be posting some pics for you as soon as I get the box up and running. I am currently growing some beaster buds but I have thai super skunk and wreckage on order and soon to be here. Im glad you told me about the bill because that has been my only reason for going with cfls but I will soon be changing that. 10 or 15 dollars isn't enough to keep me from growing with the best. My local store has some digital ballast 250 watters for a fair price. How much did you pay for yours. Are the agro bulbs better than the regular ones. I can't wait to see your mature super lemon haze. I got to say when I first seen it on attitude I was like DAMN!!!!!!! as soon as I get better at growing I am for sure ordering this. Thanks for the heads up on the nutes too because I have to try those after hearing what you guys have said about it. Good luck with your grow and I will be here for the long haul.

Never,

Also with fimming, the result is turning the plant in to a giant bush, not really height control. LST is the best for height control cause it forces the plant to grow horizontal, not vertical, so if height control is the goal, tie that bitch down.

And Jig is right on with the crowding. My last grow I had some crowding issues, and the crowded buds are not dense at all. Next time I will know that more and more bud sites are only as good as the space and light you provide them.

Also, my SLH is a week old today so keep posting info as u get it and we can try to help each other out! If I ever decide to stop being a paranoid pussy maybe I'll post some pics.

yo seeme, i bought all this stuff back in April so i don't remember all the prices, but let me do my best to answer. i know i paid $85 for the Agrosun Bulb and about $25 for the socket. for the Lumatek Electronic Ballast (for up to 250W bulbs), i honestly don't remember, but i think i paid about $80 for that, as well.

regarding going with 250W vs 400W... it mainly depends on the area of your grow. two things to keep in mind, the 400W bulb will obviously be more expensive to run and secondly, there will be significantly more heat with the 400W bulb. my 250W is barely manageable, but i can go w/o a cool tube since winter is coming and i like my condo in the low to mid 60s.

as for the humboldt county own's nutes... just do some research on it before you buy it. you'll see that everyone says you have to be careful using these products. i will admit, i'm a bit scared of screwing up my grow, but i want the challenge.
