Light and Heat issues...

I've made a couple of posts, with various newbie questions which after reading back seem pretty crap,
so I'm going to try and write one without being so high!

Anywayssss,

I have a cupboard grow that's about to commence, about a foot and a half in width and depth, with 4 plants squeezed in, plenty of height. I am putting a 200w HPS light in at the top with the walls painted white to reflect the light.
Is this going to cause a lot of heat?
If so what other lighting methods could i get away with?
There will be 2 4" fans, one in and one out taking about 100m3 an hour through with a carbon filter attached for odor control.

I am growing 4 northern soul... (Anyone know anything about these, better than lights? there's not much info on them)

I also have a loft space available if all else fails which i can wall up and that will be about 2 feet in depth and 5 feet width but quite a short height of only 1 meter, i could put a grid above though for the plants to grow through which I've seen done in grows with limited height.

This is going to be my last post before i start this grow and a dairy to follow, so any advice is greatly appreciated. :blsmoke:

Forget the cupboard Idea not enough space for 4 plants also 200w hps is really
not enough light for 4 plants either. In that small space that will create some heat.
Move em to the loft space and get more light.
You might want to look into scrog or Lts.

200 watts is plenty... sog them.. or screen them. get a air cooled ballast and blast that hot air out of your spot... this will allow the 200 watts to be alot closer than any higher wattage light because it puts out less heat.. lower power as well but the light can be closer to the plants... id say flower them at like 8 inches in 5 inch pots....you dont have much folliar penetration with less wattage, i hope this makes sense.. message me if anything is unclear

ps... u could aslo go led... people know them all the time bud for vegging... my 90w ufo smokes any 400w mh i have

i cant vouch for the 90w ufo in flowering tho... i used my 400 watt hps for them because i have other seedlings that needed the pure lightban they require to photosythesize... the proper leds make the plants the heathiest green i have ever seen along with the help of my organic nutes

me and my friends are actually going to making some led lights... they have 3 watt led bulbs and we are going to but 300 in a ballast... oooo yeah and the leds will be replacable.... imagine running 900 watts led... maybe then it can battle the good old 1000hps... then plasma bulbs are comming and that will be the end of leds

I have 5plants under a 400w & they way they yield.
I wouldn't to try a 200w with 4 even with scrog or sog. The less light the smaller the yield
and the more stretching you got. If your going to spend that kind of money on leds
why not just get and nice 400w hps and grow some serious plantage.

200 is plenty, a 400 is just more heat
word... overkill for that small a place and with 4 plants... 50 watts of hps per plant with a light that can be twice as close... hmmmm yeah deffinately better to go with a 200w seeing your space.. unless u want to get a 3X3 spot and get a 400... but really if u know how to grow anything over 200 will be fine unless you are planning on entering the cannabis cup....flouros and cfls can even make good bud... its all how bad u want those buds bud !

2FT in depth 5 ft in width and a meter in height. those are almost my dimensions 400w is not overkill.
If it's air cooled it's not more heat. But hey agree to disagree

Wow, there's a lot of different views here, i suppose it varies on the strains too.

sounds like 400w though in a cupboard grow like mine is just too much though heat-wise,
If so i could move up into the loft, but ventilation becomes the issue here as it's a bigger space with the same sized fans.

I know CFL's will produce far less heat, but they are expensive to get equal watts to a HPS and don't get quite the same yield
(i tried to word that carefully as I've seen plenty of arguments over this)
Good luck on the LED's, they sound like a good idea but i don't have that kind of money to burn...

I suppose if push comes to shove i could just cut down to 2 plants at a time.
I think this would do the trick, wouldn't it? Far less bud though.

And yeah, nothing like sitting back after a hard days growing/smoking and enjoying some dairy.
Enjoying some tasty white rhino now, might get a yogurt!
(i meant diary)

Well with your cupboard space the cfls would work great. I still think it's too small
a space for 4 plants but hey i'm sure it's been done. I've tried scrog & sog and i don't
get as much bud as I want for all that work( prob just me :( ). With the spaces I have I use both cfls &
a 400w hps (two seperate rooms) I grow 4-5 in each. I top at the 3rd node then let them
grow to about 14" before I put into flower. I end up around 2' for harvest usually.
Out of each plant I get about 3-4 oz. So really it all depends on how much bud your lookin to get.
You can def get more out of a bigger space with more light. That's all I'm saying.
If you do the cupboard it sounds too small for hps. The loft would be better for the hps.
