Mr I Can Do That For Half
I can understand you not liking the time commercials take up but soccer games are no quick event either they take waht 6 hours to play a game lol. I woke up saw a game while flipping channels left mowed the lawn took a shower ate and came back and the fucking thing was still on and the timer was going up instead of down lol.As far as other countries not playing american sports better check out baseball and basketball they are played worldwide and growing fast.American football did well with NFL europe but not enough teams to keep it worth while.Actually basketball is the fastest US growing sport now with baseball in decline as it needs so much room and equiptment to play and in the inner city for basket ball you need a small court a ball and something for a hoop and you can play forever.See Beckham and Mrs spice only show up on like tv shows like those similar to The National Enquirer.Soccer is big with the illegal mexican population in the US and other then that it ends up being the sport that kids with no hand eye cordination or who are small but can run fast play.We have world travel teams and play other countries with basketball, baseball and football, but its never fair as we made those sports and dominate at it.We did the olympics with Micheal Jordan and fellow basketball stars and it was just embarassing beating teams by 70 points without trying. Baseball now is evening out finally with real good latin teams and japaneese teams.Dominicans can play some baseball. Our NBA league has canadian teams in it and football is thinking of adding some other countries which I dont think will work because of time zones and travel.Youd have to have 2 leagues then a World Super Bowl of some sort. Soccer just doesnt do it for americans never has and dont think it ever will. But Like I said Rugby that games getting some good up and coming attention in the US.Thats the real Brit mans sport there.

I've watched the American shit, and it's slow and boring... people don't really get hurt because they have those massive pads on. Pussies.
2 completely different sports, in rugby you don't have 260 lb. men who have sprinter speed lining up across from each other and running into each other at full speed on every play, it's different than rugby. Not saying Rugby is not a sport of brawn or toughness it sure as hell is. But American football is a brutal game as is Rugby.

In fact I come from a city that has an ex Australian rules football player playing on our football team. I was listening to him on the radio and they asked him if he thought american football players were weak for wearing pads, and what his and other Australians thought of american football, his reply was he played both Rugby and Aussie football and he has a whole new attitude. He basically said the same thing I did, 2 different sports and rugby and aussie football do not have physical specimens running full speed into each other on every play. He also got his ass handed to him in his first game and he was asked about that, dude played aussie football for 17 years and said he had never been hit so hard in his whole life. The average american football career isn't even 3 years, injuries and broken bodies. He also playing a non contact position...he's a punter.

No offense but if you lived in america you would realize that beckham hasn't made a dent and he's been hurt the whole time.

Yeah I dont believe that NFL is a pussy sport cos they wear pads. If they didnt, teams wouldnt have enough players left at the end of games as they would be all lined up get X-rays at the local hospital.
However as for football being a slow game, thats bullshit when you compare it to other sports, both US and English. A football game has 2 45min halfs with a 15min break in between. If it is a league game, it will never run over that time (unless something wierd happens in the game). If its a knockout game and scores are level, then you have 2 15mins halfs of extratime and if still level a penalty shootout. Its the same principles with pretty much all sports, however it is not controlled by sponsers as to when and where a play can happen. Basketball maybe (according to you) the fastest growing sport in the world, but at the end of the day no sport will ever overtake football in terms of fans and interest. I bet 1/2 the UK, prob the world, didnt even know that the NFL was in London on Sun

Me neither... I didn't know till i read some little headline in the newspaper. In the paper it said that some boistrous fans helped keep the atmosphere alive... ha ha ha ha ha ha. The rest were all hobo's that were shuffled in for free off the streets.

Gygax, have you ever watched a game of rugby? All they do all game is run at each other... Aussie rules football is even worse. I could ask any ORDINARY Australian which they think more of a contact sport and they'd say aussie rules every time...

Oh, and the 250lbs... that's commonplace in our rugby games too. It depends on your position... just like American rules football. Only in rugby they don't wear pads. You get stamped in the face, and there isn't a guard there to protect it. You get taken down by a 250lb man running at full speed with yourself running at a similar speed, without any pads... you're asking for a whole lot of trouble. Bone crunching tackles is a real life term in rugby.

Now I have watched both Rugby and Australian rules football, I can't figure out what the difference is.

What all you people fail to mention is Rugby, Soccer, whatever the hell you call your sports.....the average weight per person is 160lbs....In the NFL you have 320+ lb lineman waiting to pancake your ass.....Dont talk about American football being pussy as opposed to your shit.....If it werent for the pads people would be dropping like my cock after high on viagra.......In other words, American football is not pussy because of pads, the pads are what save your life.

What you also fail to realise is that football and rugby are two completely different sports... I failed to mention that the average weight of a rugby player is 160lbs? That's bullshit. A 12 stone rugby player wouldn't last very long. You haven't got a clue what you're talking about.

I also don't need to know about your difficulties maintaining an erection. American Football is a faggot sport. Period.

the part I underlined... why not? What are you going to do about it?

Yes I have watched rugby, they do not have athletes like the NFL does not even close, we actually have rugby clobs in my area of the states and your right we do suck compared to the rest of the world but we try...lol.

Rugby players do not line up directly acroos from each other and run downhill into each other NFL players do it on every down, and I was talking about 260 lb people who can run as fast as a sprinter they aren't even the biggest guys on the field, do me a favor pull up a professional Rugby teams roster including weights and I'll laugh at you, then I'll show you an NFL roster....lol not even close. Once again not saying rugby players are pussies they aren't just 2 different games completely.

The reason some guys are 320lbs + is cos all they have to do is stand there and stop another big fat guy from getting past. Then they swap after a while so another big fat guy on their team can try and get past another big fat guy. U honestly telling me these big fat guys can take on sprinters, or run a marathon. I think not.
But yeah some NFL players are pretty built and can run fast. Same as in rugby players push 310lb and can play a whole match as well not just 2 min stints followed by an advert then another line change. A few rugby players are as tall as 6' 9". One guy is 6' 5" weighs over 260lbs and can bench press 500lbs and can also play a whole game of rugby.
If your impressed with your big fat NFL players who can run into each other from a few yards away, you should love sumo wrestling. It has bigger, fatter people who run into each other

You lot started it!!!!

Only joking, I dont know??
But I do think Beckham is going to have a positive impact on Football there, even if you specifically dont like him/football, he's still going to raise the profile loads.
You have to think that he's joined a team at the end of the season and has been injured for most of that. You cant really judge him until next season kicks in

beckham isn't really there to play... just like when Pele joined LA Galaxy, it was all to deepen American interest in the sport. I think they've had a couple of famous players... I think they buy one every decade. Its just one big money spinner, and the beckhams know how to play to the media. Even if they need to go out to buy some milk it is 'leaked' to the newspapers.

Love it or hate it, football is going tobe making a bigger impact in the US as the years progress.

The only reason any American cares about soccer is becuz

#1 their kids play it , 'cuz its good exercise and all, but they outgrow it..

#2 All the fuggin Mexicans swarming into the country

Soccer will never be the dominant sport in the US, like it is in all the 3rd world countries and Europe.

WE got Football, Basketball, and Baseball :joint:
Thank God too.. who wants to watch an hour of dudes running up and down a field for a 1-0 score?

What's your problem with mexicans? The spanish discovered America first... well, after the vikings did... but the spanish settled there first.

There are no gods.

It's 90 minutes, and millions of people all over the world watch it. Football (the real kind) is played all over the world. Even a tiny country like San Marino, who are shit, still love the game.

When you say it like that, it sounds quite elitist. The reason Euro-Football has never been popular in the US has nothing to do with lack of contact, or the fact that it is popular everywhere else (not just Europe & 3rd world countries.)

I lived in Scandinavia for a while, and I must admit that, when I was there, I loved Euro-Football. I knew the fight songs, wore the jerseys, and played the drinking games with my friends. When I came back to the US, however, I found it quite boring.

If you look at the popular US sports, US-Football, basketball, baseball, you'll find the common denominator in that each game allows for the start & stop of action at critical moments.
-The basses loaded at the bottom of the ninth.
- Jordan's 3-point shot with a 1/2 second on the clock.
- The 45-yard field goal with 5 seconds to go.

When you have a vested interest in such a game, you get a total sense of euphoria that no other sports have (well maybe tennis... but you get the point.) If any of you non-US peeps doubt me, youtube the Steelers 1972 ‘Immaculate Reception.’

It would require a fundamental paradigm shift in US culture for such a sport as soccer to ever root deeply in popularity.

Skunk you are right football/soccer is the most popular sport in the world. And it is very popular for kids over here, it's just not a popular pro sport over here. And the one guy hit the nail on the head, and hour for a 1-0 game is not very entertaining. I noticed that goes for hockey too, I love hockey but I grew up in a city with a team, a popular team but most of southern america could give a shit about hockey. Just the way it is over here.

And I agree with you that soccer is a tough sport, they have to be athletes big time but it's just not all that big here. In fact today is Sunday and most families here is america will be around the tv watching the NFL. I also think it has a lot to do with male bonding over here, holidays have football games and whole families watch it. I know in my household as a kid it was the only time I spent with my father so it has some sentimental value to me. I would also be willing to bet that a lot of guys on here would say the same thing. And on a side note I'm 33 in those 30 some years I have never seen our pro soccer team play, in fact two days ago was the first time I saw an add for the team, it's just not big here.
