Thats awesome. I don't even grow outdoors and I want one just for hunting. They have come a long way since I looked into them a few years ago.

I recently cleared out a few spot in a huge French Broom thicket for next march. (always sunny in cali)
French broom looks like this:
The only difference is that the french broom around here is about 15 feet tall with stalks about 2 inches in diameter. This thicket is located on a beautiful southfacing hill which gets sun for at least 9 hours a day. I have to crawl on my hands and knees/belly to get to the area that i cleared out. Theres no path leading to it that is visible from human height. You can't even see the path from rabbit height, you just gotta know where it starts. The spaces i cleared out are 10x10 circles, and I plan to fill them with plants. Other, darker green plants such as Coyote Brush and a few small Oak trees grow in the French broom, as well as poison oak

so this thread did inspire me to go check out some trailcam prices
the good ones seem to run around the $500 point
there are cheap ones that start around $50, from my quick read on the reviews the cheap ones are more likely to get false triggers, and shoot lots of pics
for myself, i know i would want 2 to feel safe, want the redundancy and a couple of view points
snap in a cheap cell phone, and you could have quite the monitoring station, but not sure how tough it would be to get a cell phone to pull in the pics and post to a gmail account(encrypted pics preferably)

i like the gun idea,.....you dudes seen this movie called home grown...u can watch it on youtube..its pretty funny but it really does get u thinkin about the dangers of a huge crop in the woods

you could get a cheap wireless camera that has a receiver and when u get close enough 2 your crop you can have a small tv hooked up in your car 2 see whats going on and just run ur camera off a small batt and solar panel im sure you could even rig up a camera that move on a joystick 2 get a good 360 look on everything b4 u go walkn back there

Awesome, if you do get it to work, maybe you could write a DIY, it would be killer.

Both have good ideas, and DIY's on these would sweep the weed forums like a wildfire.
i've thought of this too, it could work but there are some things you're getting with the trailcam
one is the motion sensor, that's a bit of cost
the other is they're weather proofed, this is the big one in my opinion
building a weather proof enclosure is possible, but indoor electronics don't always fare so well in the outdoors
you really need a bit of heat to keep condensation away, which makes a bit more of an involved project
yeah, that's another trick to help out
but when you seal hermetically(air tight), then you may develop heat issues
if your electronics are coming on just occasionally, this could work
love to do this next year for a few plants, inside growing provides for my needs, but i don't feel like i'm really growing without something outdoors

but in all honestly if you have ever seen a wild bear you would want a gun sitting out in the middle of the forest, if not a rifle a big bow!
