well not real police, show me your badge. but someone at the hydro supplier who says hey... wait a minute, this persons bill just jumped a 100 bucks a month. then they phone the police and bam! your busted. maybe my friend is just paranoid.

Let's assume for a moment you are correct. It would not take too many subpoenas before the company realized they have a rat in their midst.
Now let's not pretend that hydroponics supply companies assume all their customers are growing tomatoes.
No company would tolerate activity that went against the bottom line. Grow supplies are perfectly legal and the rat would be divulging private customer information to law enforcement.
Once exposed, the rat would be history.

99.99% of that shit is automated. If you pay for it, everything should be just fine. They only care when you STEAL the power and things don't add up. If they look at how much power was consumed on their end and it doesn't add up on your end, they will try and bag you for stealing power. If you just pay it no one will even see or notice or care.

Let's say there is a power company and it has 500 users in the area that use 200% the amount of power other people use due to grow rooms (unrealistic I know but it's an example). That is essentially like having 500 EXTRA consumers to pay them then normally. Why would they want to cut business so drastically, especially to people who use a ton of power. It is making them money. Just don't steal it.

I think alot of folks on here really underestimate just how many people actually grow tomatoes and peppers and shit in there house. Escpecially middle aged bored health conscious people from colder climates who want fresh veggies. I personally have never really sweated ordering online. Although, i have wondered if the ups of fedex guys handheld device shows the hydro companies full name.
Now, saying that, if you have a grow op at your home and you drive your own car which is registered to you to your local hydro shop and you walkout with suppplies- that is fuckin retarded. Especially if you are younger. IMO atleast. Of course, if you live in a lax state im not talking to you, but if youre in FL or TX or somewhere like that just take a taxi or get a trusted relative to drive you.

I know 100% for a fact that police have waited outside hydro stores, waiting for someone to pick up supplies and follow them home, collecting more evidence as they go along.
a friend of a friend picked up say 15 bags of soil from local H store, all wrapped in black bin bags, Feds followed him home knocked on his door, found plants and got arrested.

as to is the power company watching that depends on where you live.
Large jumps in hydro can bring attention even if you are paying your bills. And yes it is all computer controlled that's the point the computer triggers an alert on the account if it goes over a set point. Gradual increase is the way to go.
In some places like Canada it is more of a crime to steal power than to grow. Go figger EH!
