a general reposity of my calamities while going through the first grow of super duty fruity.

i'm starting with 10 regular seeds 9 of which sprouted, 1 didn't sprout at all and 1 took it's sweet time almost 2 weeks before it cracked the shell.

i'm mostly using 2 liter's as pots since i'm only sexing the plants and looking to see the characteristics of them. before picking a mother and finalizing the grow chamber layout.

I expect to veg for ~1 month or until they are around 40cm tall. 2 clones of each will be on hand so when the final decision is made i'll be using those. hopefully at least 4 of the 9 plants will be female, and i may choose to seed one of them just so i have a stock of seeds on hand. you never know when you might run into problems or want to help a friend out with a few seeds.

the current lighting is a 600w hps that i will be using for both the veg and flowering. just a single light for the time being and then i will setup some fluorescent lights for the clones.

so i encountered my first problem 2 days after putting the germs in some dirt. i stuck the pots in the window since i didn't want to plug the hps in just yet. but being on the winter schedule of light the plants strrreeeetttttcccchhhhheeedddd to almost 18cm in just 2 days. after collapsing under the weight of just the water leaves. i got some advice on the newbie portion of the forum, setup the hps, and did what i could for the plants. which made an awesome recovery in just one day. less one plant whose stem i broke but it's still alive and doing good.

what did we learn? no sunlight is better than to little sunlight.

so the top soil i chose is pretty lame. the plants are starting to turn yellow and growth has all but stopped. so i put some 1/4 to 1/2 strength veg nutes into a spray bottle and gave them some lovin'. it seems way to early to be feeding the plants, so i hope it's not something else. i really don't want to be exacerbating the problem. it's still an hour or so till the light cycle starts, let the nail biting begin.

Depending on the soil that you chose to use (and you did not list) it could be the soil causing problems if it is a pre-fertilized soil. So adding nutes would just exacerbate the problem. Check that out first. I would also recommend checking your PH.

i don't remember which soil i chose and i tossed the bag for it already. it's not fox farms or any other major brand so i doubt anyone would know it. the dude at the gardening store gave it high marks, but that doesn't mean much. you make a very good point that i should check my ph so in the next day or so i'll go buy some form of tester hopefully a nice digital one but probably just strips.

on the up side some color seems to be returning to the plants, and a modicum of growth has returned (though that could all be in my head). so in hopes that they did just need some food i gave them another spray down and dumped the remainder of the spray bottle into the the soil. they seem to be liking it, or atleast not angry with me for it. but i'm still keeping my fingers crossed that the decision to feed wasn't premature. i'll post more pics once i figure out what filter to use with my light. it's annoying having all the pics in a sort of sepia tone.

thanks for commenting i hope more people leave comments. growing just seems more fun as a communal activity.

yeah i'm not transplanting them, i'm barely growing them at all. they are just getting big enough to clone and then off to flower so i can get rid of the males and pick a nice mother plant. i also kind of want to see what the characteristics of growth are. i'm not expecting much out of this cycle. the next one though. oh how i look forward to seeing my clones grow :)..

i do really need to start thinking about how i'm gonna do my clones. i haven't ever worked with clones or cloning before so i have alot of reading ahead of me in the next week or so.

any suggestions?

it seems i horribly underestimated the root growth of my plants. at ~11cm tall the roots were completely bound up. so i went and picked up some 5gal buckets and a bunch of decent dirt. 5 of 8 have been transplanted so far, and are looking happy with the new roomier environment. with just a touch of anger from getting moved.

all in all i'm calling it a success. i'll take pics once the lights come back on.

after everything i have done to these plants it's amazing to see how well they are doing. i'm still fighting with some heat stress on the plants, but it's starting to get better. i gave them some slight nitrogen burn, and then the next day transplanted them. they are little troopers dealing with some form of calamity almost daily. here is what they look like now.




nice compact node structure i think they have a node about every 2cm currently. the tallest is ~15cm tall at this point, with the shortest of the transplants coming in around 12cm. so the growth is very consistant which i'm very pleased about. smell is starting to become an issue not even a month old and the room smells just delicious. looks like an investment in some sort of air cleaner is going to be happening before long.
