GTs 2010 OD grow

Thought I would post what I am going to use this year for my soil mix. It is similar to what I used last year for my soil. This year I will need to do the same layering method as I did last year in the pots but I will just do it in the raised beds. So I will have soil layer A on the top 8-10 inches followed by a mix of soil layers A + C, and followed lastly by soil layer C. The recipe here is what I used for the 12- 20-gal pots I used last year. I had a little left over with this recipe but my calculation is for the new area.

I also had planned to use what I have in the pots as a base compost/potting soil and just add the amendments and additional fresh compost and potting soil.

If I plant a plant every 8 linear feet and separate them 10 laterally then each grow area for each plant will be approximately 80 cu ft. That is about 5 times what I used to fill all 20 pots last year. So what I am going to do is create a 5 ft diameter circle in each 80 cu ft area where the plant will be in the center and have 2 ft total depth of the A/B/C soil layers. This will come out to 12.5 cu ft per plant or I will need about 160 cu ft of total soil layers above the native substrate. I think I will attempt to do some drawings next week when I go back to work. Here are the goodies for the soil mix:

Soil Layer C (all quantities will be multiplied by 6 to fill a 5 ft circle 2 ft deep for each plant)

15 cuft (9 cuft G&B Compost, 3.8 cuft Promix, 2 cuft G&B Potting soil)
40 lbs pure worm castings
5 lbs blood meal
5 lbs bone meal
5 lbs bloom bat guano
1 c sweet lime (dolomite)
3/4 c Epsom salt
1/2 c azomite (trace elements)
1/2 c powdered humic acid
50 lbs chicken manure
2 c kelp meal
perlite

The upper soil layer is as follows:

Soil Layer A (all quantities will be multiplied by 6 to fill a 5 ft circle 2 ft deep for each plant)

16 cuft (6 cuft G&B Compost, 3.8 cuft Promix, 6 cuft G&B Potting soil)
40 lbs pure worm castings
2 c kelp meal
1/2 c powdered humic acid
1/2 c azomite (trace elements)
perlite

Soil Layer B is a mix of A + B

Damn!! That’s a lot of soil. About 160 cu ft total.

So once I excavate the 6-8 inches of clayey soil, I will add some amendments like gypsum to breakup the clay. I need to ask the OCFS what is good for clay but again I’m not trying to do anything with the native clay layer. About 12 inches of soil layer C goes on top of the native soil followed by 4 inches of a mix of soil layers A+C, followed by 8 inches of layer A for a total of 2 ft of soil above the native clay layer. I will probably see if I can buy some bulk organic compost from the local landfill for the in between spaces.

OK I need to work on some drawings.

My backyard is a little flooded right now but we needed the water so its all good. Like I said before it's nothing like what you guys had last year.

Glad those beans are at least starting out the right way. I expect good things out of them too. Too bad TLDs thread got locked out or you could see the CC and WC indoors.

4 cuft for 20 is good. They usually charge us 23 for 5 cuft. It is getting hard to get good quality perlite these days though. Alot of dust and smaller sized particles with the perlite. I usually order #3 but the quality has been so bad I've had to order #4.

THe JS was the first down so I know its cured and not wet. Damn slab you have to not be so stoned as to let the joiunt go out. Hey Boomer. Now that you are stress free you can do that smoke report we have been waiting for <taps foot>.

I found my sheets for my soil mix last year so I will get my excel spread sheet out to calculate my cost for this years grow. This is going to hurt I think.

I wasn't really expecting that from the JS. It didn't have any special smell to it. Just really heavy cures like a pipe tobacco or old Colombian Gold from the 70's. But when I went to pull it apart I could feel the sticky resin and cured flowers. Nice Dude, so many people rush their weed through drying and curing. The JS wan't wet, not at all. I just always use my little pipe so each toke is fresh usually 2 or 3 then it needs a fresh pinch. But I just kept losing track of things under the JS. Time and pain and hell I got too much to be doing to be smoking that. :bigjoint:

See I can't even remember the ones I haven't tried yet. :wall:

ha , now where is my lighter...:leaf:

Ok back to business. Im going through the inventory and Im going to have to pick 12 strains for the grow. I have also been planning the grow area and tent cover. WHile the tent really wont be needed until flowering starts, I still am planning that part out.

These are what I plan to use for the connectors for the plant tent/greenhouse

http://www.teksupply.com/farm/supplies/cat1;ts1_greenhouses_accessories-ts1_greenhouse_construction;ts1_quik_klamp_pipe_fittings_8.html

I have a 20 x 50 area for the grow. If it ever stops raining on the weekends I can get started on the raised beds.

I plan on starting the seeds in the next week or 2 and then the ball will be rolling. Check back in a few for continued action.

Ok here is what I have wittled it down to. It was a tough choice but it was alot of work with just 5 strains and 11 plants last time and I dont want to be over extended come harvest time.

I decided to try to get a variety of strains. Some of these were gifted and I wanted to grow some of these last time but they wouildnt pop for me so I will try again. Others were from the breeder of my best of 2009 strain (JTR) so I thought I would give them a whirl too. The rest are from breeders from all over the world with some famous strains so I hope to do them right.

Here is my list that I hope will all pop. I will select the males and females from the best plants that rise. If they are not what Im looking for then they wont finish the race. Any comments on possible phenos are welcome as I will be looking for different phenos with desireable traits.

2010 OD Grow Short list

-Maui Wowie (Skunk)
-Papaya (Papaya (Nirvana) Citral #13 x Ice #2)
-California Indica x Big Bud (Afghani x Skunk #1)
-Vortex (Apollo 13 ((Brothers Grimm) Genius x Princess 88) x Space Queen
-Space Queen f2 (Romulan x Cinderella 99)
-Quirkle (Urkle x Space Queen) The shorter females with a grape smell and even a tinge of color early are the urkle dom ones or Z line, its more indi has wider leaves and stays very short in veg. The other side is a taller sativa leaning sq dom featuring more red pistils and a lighter more cherry taste.
-Black Cherry Kush ((Black Rose (Purple Shiva Skunk x [AK 47 x Blackberry]) x Cherry Assassin (Cherry AK47 x Kryptonite’s OG SFV bx1))
-Cinderella 99 pineapple Bros Grimm pheno
-Ultimate Chem (91 Chemdawg x Chem D) x Lemon Thai Sativa
-Hells Angel OG Kush (OG Kush x blueberry) x (DJ Short's Blueberry x chimera grapefruit [male])

That is a great list
Hope they all grow for you
Thx Earl. Me too. Thats why I have 14 strains listed in case they dont pop like last year. I had 2 strains that didnt open for me.

Im going to get my seedling soil ready for the starter pots. I will be using promix BX. I am going to be using 1 gal pots this year. I plan to avoid experiencing root bound plants by watching for the roots in the bottom of the pots or planting in the ground early.

I better get some ferts while Im at it.

Thx Slab. You too have an impressive selection which Im sure will give you the adventure you seek.

I think all of the TGA gear is bomb and between the two of us we shall see what's good. I am also looking at some Black Rose crosses so we hopefully will see some purple dankness this year.

I just hope I can get all the seeds to pop for me this year. Last year I had 2 strains (6 seeds total) not even pop. Oh well out of 26 thats not bad but I want to do better so I at least have 1 good girl out of each strain.

Im also looking for the good guys too. I mainly will be doing pheno searching as some of these strains have more than one desirable pheno and some better than others.

Ok got the rooters soaking in distilled H2O. Trying to get a container ready so when the seeds come out I can veg them without streching too much. I may just put them into soil after they pop so they can grow freely. It is a little cold (relatively for Socal) at night still to leave them out all night.

If I get off my lazy butt I should get some soil for the first pots tomorrow or Sat.

I havent decided on whether to use a auger and drill some holes and fill them with my soil or do raised beds. The raised beds as I calculate it will take a butload of my soil = mucho $. I had to cut the area down to 20 x 30 due to space and sun exposure.

Im ordering/comparing the canopy/greenhouse setup options to see what will be best. I have the design done so now I need to part it out and see what it will cost.

I will get some pics of the rooter/seed setting as soon as I get a little organized. I need to get the labels and starting area ready.

Holes are sure less expensive. I'd need a couple of dump trucks for raised beds. hahaha

chop chop

Yeah I might try putting my Rapid Rooters right in cups next time. That taproot sure grows fast.

Catch you later GT.

Thx for stopping by Slab :bigjoint:

I am really leaning towards the auger holes. I learned my lesson last year when I got delayed with the tree trimming and uppotting from the smaller pots. The plants were 3-4 feet tall and in less than one gallon pots. Needless to say they were really rootbound and most likely stunted somewhat because of it.

I plan on starting in the rooters and potting them after a week or 2 into 1-3 gallon pots. Once they are potted, the clock will be ticking on getting those auger holes done and get the canopy/greenhouse erected. I keep designing/redesigning the grow area so I need to go with a plan and ber done with it.
