It depends. I know that that is a opened answer but consider the variables.
How much air space is in the attic that will allow for disapation of heat?
How much heat is vented?
How much insulation is in the attic?
How thick is the roof? Normally you have at least .75 sheeting followed by a layer or two of 30 lb to 75 lb tar paper followed by shingles. And that is just what is above the rafters.
Is the attic finished? i.e. Is there sheetrock on the walls and ceiling.
ETC. ETC.
If you notice that the snow is gone on your roof before your neighbors or that the rain dries quicker on your roof than your neighbors you probably have a problem.
If your a little paranoid about it get a thermal thermometer from the auto store. The thermometers that can be pointed at a heat source and read the heat without touching the source. They are used a lot in the nitro rc hobby, and are fairly cheap. Anyway the use the thermometer to Compare the temp of your roof to other roofs in your neighborhood.

jus outta curiosity the flir never shows the outline off the people until they step out into the open!! THEY CANNOT SEE THRU WALLS!! IF THEY COULD I WOULD ALREADY BE A GONER!!! because i have 2 600watts in the attic of my garage

If growing in a room that uses an exterior wall what are some good ways to reduce the heat signiture on the wall? I was considering building another wall 6" in and filling the gap with insulation. Having just moved to a new city I have seen several police cars with infrared sensors and that gives me reason to be cautious.

They have em alright. They got special thermal imaging units around here. They also use them for comercial vehicle inspections at the scales and check-stops. I doubt they can see clear outlines of images through walls though. Like iivan740 said, they can tell if your roof is hotter than all the neighbours and such.

If the wall is already properly insulated you should be ok. It really depends on how many lights and other equipment you are running. If you are worried the false wall and extra insulation couldn't hurt.
I don't think they are actually mounted to the cars. They typically use handheld units just like fire departments use. They probably have car mounted ones available but they are probably too cost prohibitive for most police departments. The handheld ones look something like this:

True. They are looking for specific things when it comes to heat signatures. Some countries, especially in the u.k., are particularly aggressive with their use of thermal imagers. Laws vary from place to place. I do believe the worry is overhyped thanks to police fearmongering. Large indoor grow ops are really who needs to be worried. Not the guy with one or two lights and a handful of plants.

Just because it's illegal doesn't mean it's not still done. More than likely they will need more evidence than FLIR, especially in the U.S. It's important to understand what we're up against. As demonstrated by this and every other thread about police helicopters or infrared or whatever, a lot of people think that they can see a 40 watt bulb through your walls. Some think that they actually can see through walls. The whole FLIR thing is a valid concern but mainly for the large commercial grower.

If you seal your room up right then they will not be able to see your house glowing. Set your blower to connect to your chimney and have it come out your roof. Does not look abnormal. Oh yeah...and don't tell anyone what you are doing and you should have no problems. People talk and thats what gets alot of people busted!

This is how it typically works. They will fly over an area, usually at night, and scan houses. The ones that show up "suspicious" on FLIR get further investigation. They won't need to introduce FLIR evidence. They will simply set up surveillance, rifle through trash, talk to neighbors, or do the dreaded knock and talk. Illegally obtained evidence or not, they don't have to introduce any evidence they feel won't hold up. The cops know what they are doing (most of the time). This isn't new to them. This is what they do. I said before that I think this whole "infrared" thing is way overhyped. The cops put this info out there to deter people. They make it sound like if you are growing 1 plant they can tell by scanning your house. That's b.s. plain and simple.
