Can you use a HPS or Metal Halide for tanning?

Yes, and skin cancer too.

Bad idea, but it would work. Tanning lights or the sun would be safer/work better.

I was wondering if I laid there and enjoyed my girls for a while under my hps or metal halide, would I get a tan?
yeah, you could get a serious tan from a mh especially, they have a lot of output in UV-B frequency range. incidentally UVB is also most responsible for skin cancers, but uh... it's your skin.

I heard a horror story about the shields on some gymnasium HPS lights malfunctioning, and like 30 people were treated for sun burn and sun poisoning after getting sick. not fun. But that was probably well over 10k+ watts of lighting

Awesome! My newborn has jaundice, so my 1000W MH for a few minutes a day should be just the ticket.
