cool tube vs magnum xxxl reflector, pros and cons.

Hi everyone. I want to set up a 5x10 tent and run two 1000's but I can't decide on what reflectors to use. I like the new magnum xxxl's huge dimension to get the light spread out but I dont know if the 1000s will need that big of a reflector if each one is only covering a 5x5 area. now I know the 1000s in that size tent is going to create some heat so would I be better off with cool tubes to cool it more efficiently? I guess Im just looking for some opinions here. I mean if the 1000s in a cool tube will cover a 5x5 sufficiently than I think the cool tubes are the way to go but man those magnums are huge there would only be about 1 foot around the outside edges that wouldnt be under the hood but they are heavy though. thanks for all thoughts.

yeah with 2 1k's you better run cooled hoods and get a the reflcetor that best fits the area you r tryen to light it will be more focused

I think cool tubes are cheap and easy and cool very efficiently. I love the one I built with my 400mh/hps. What are you planning to use for a fan? What size ducting?

I use a little modified reflector around my cool tube it's spreads the light out perfect for my setup.

I plan on using 6in ducting and a 6in vortex style fan. both hoods are coolable its pretty much just a debate over wider spread coverage or more efficient cooling. I mean for cooling the tubes would be better but the wide stance of the magnum will give me more even coverage I believe. Im just not sure if I really need better coverage with the 1000s.

the manuel that came with my lamp says 1000 w covers 8 x 8 area

yeah i am thinking 1 xxxl would cover your tent more than enough

then that tent will get HOT....

if you are to run 2 tents... i would recommend 2 tents with 2 magnum xxxls 8" ducting... then use 1 8" fan to cool the lights off inline... or get the 6" version and put a cool hood or reflector cover to help contain the heat well

i have 4 magnum xxxls and 1 8" fan to cool them all.... works great

cool tubes would be efficient also but i really think 1 1000w would be more than enough for a 5x5 area... i have them covering a bigger area and they work great

I have a cooltube now and I dream of a MagnumXXL! Yes I think the cooltube would stay a bit cooler, but the light distribution of the hood will be far superior to that of the cooltube. UNLESS you want to do something cool like build bleacher seating for your plants and then run the 2 vented cooltubes down the middle without reflectors. The main variable is your preferred growing style.

Then I would think the second variable would be your location and how hot it gets there in the summertime. If you're down south, you might want to go with the cooltube as I did. If you're further up north where 2k of light in a 5x10 area isn't going to run that hot then I would definitely go with two MagnumXXLs and one 8" inline fan exhausting both out to another area.

Are you kidding? A really good sealed reflector like that of the Sun System Ocho or a Hydrofarm Raptor, will absolutely kick the shit outta those janky ass cool tubes.

"ViaGrow" (through hydrowholesale, among others) sells a 6" tube with 31"x24" reflector bolted on. It's basically the footprint of a Magnum with the cooling efficiency of a tube. Plus it's just 7" high overall (very little headroom required compared to a "conventional" air-cooled hood). You have to assemble it yourself (which may scare the non-mechanically-inclined off) but it's not difficult and it ends up being quite sturdy.

I have 7 x 8" Mag. XXXL air cooled hoods and although I've only ran one at a time in line, I can tell you that even one 6" inline fan will be enough to cool it. I can touch the glass even right under the bulb at 1K watts. The outer areas of the glass are cool to the touch and of course it's hot DIRECTLY under the bulb, but it's not warm enough to burn ya or anything. You can get these very close to the plants.

im gonna start making my own, i can make them fucking watertight if i wanted to being the fact i have welding experience. maybe ill do a diy on it or even buy materials for 15 bucks and make 3 of them and sell em to you guys for 20 bucks, hell 20 bucks for a cool hood that matches the raptor would be a deal right?

I use cool tube for my 400w light. It's great for tight spaces but a hood is gonna give you more coverage as far as footprint goes. Either way you can get you light within inches of the tops

Since I go vert bare bulb or cool tubes do the trick.
