Why should I top my plants?

I have been getting feed from both sides of people on this. One saying that if you grow and do not top you get more bud and u end up getting a huge cola that usually gives you more weight then topping. I also have heard that topping gives you more colas and they get as big as it would without topping. Does topping actually give you more yield? Any input is great. Here are some pics of my babies about 14 days into grow some are only 7 days into it. Got them under a 1000w MH for veg with Co2 will flower under a 1000w HPS with ac unit and will keep humidity at about 20-30% max. Temp will be at 70 degrees and I am using advanced nutrients A & B. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
 
well it can and it cant. some plants dont mind to be topped and react well to it, but some ont like to be topped. i topped this girl to keep her a lil lower fer the 2 months i vegged her and to open up the canopy a bit more........

it can with sum strains, that wont mind to be topped! it will open up the canopy increasing ur intake of light there fore maximizing yield. BUT some strains DONT like to be topped and it may actually decrease ur final yield.
 
my opinion is that it does increase yeild

at least for the strains i'm working with

what strains are those?
 
the point in the plants life cycle that you top is super important. EX: some people top in beginning some top three weeks into veg or whatever. I have found that topping can be beneficial if you do it relatively early into veg so the plant has time to establish the new shoots being created. After topping give it some time(at least a week) before you try anything else so the plant doesn't get stressed too much.

considering you have a 1000 watt light reaching the canopy below with usable light is not gonna be a problem. most people top to get more brances with more but smaller top colas. i used to top when i needed to keep the plant low and bushy but i noticed that yield seems to always even out. big top cola and alot of 7 gram grow tips vs 4 medium colas and alot more 3 gram tips per say. i think a plant grows to uits full potential when not topped and left alone. you have more than one plant, top one and not the other and check out the difference. Fuzzy. Are they your wifes Knickers in the bottom right of the pic ?? LOL!!:hump:
 
Duh simple solution is usually the best. I will top 2 and not top 2 of the White Rhino strain and leave all the other 20 alone. I will give updates on a weekly basis if I remember.

i couldn't tell you what way is better there very very close but i just started budding 2/26 so i'll update ya in a few weeks if you get this thread to the front page again..
 
Good post was kinda wondering what everyone has to say. I have had mixed results with topping, sometimes more sometimes less. I now top all my plants, but not for more weight, I top to get shorter plants and to use the top as a clone.
 
this is what i would do.

if i planned to veg for a long period of time, say 2 months or more, i would top half way into the veg.
my ultimate goal in my current situation is to have a smooth perpetual grow.
i plan on only having 3 weeks max veg and want more plants closer together(oppose to less, more bushier plants further apart)
so i dont plan to top or fim.
but if i had more space to work with, i would most likely top.

i got some og kush LSTing right now under 12/12. we'll see how that works out
 
Why dont you just tie over the ones that are getting too close to the light?

I have 24 in an areoponics, BD, one of them shot up from one side of the table and was getting closer to the light than the ones under the light. I didnt want to stress the plant or raise the light, so I tied it over. The main shoot turned back up and started for the light again in a matter of a couple days. About a week into flower another, low side branch from the same plant was nearing the light, so I bent it over also. Now the bastard has got another one approaching the light at week 6 in flower and it looks like the one plant has got three main colas.

Hope you get this before it is too late for the little ladies...

Cool I will check for more pics. I am going to veg for another 30 days or so before I start to flower I want weight and will have the space but cannot start to flower untill I move inot my new house. Will post update pics tho and keep me updated on the results from top to not topped.

Not the problem of getting to close to the lights, wanted to know if there was a big differance in topping when it comes to final dried product. I can adjust my light if needed.
 
i think the benefit of topping comes into play as to have an even canopy. my last untopped plant had a 24 inch top cola, so the lower buds needed more light, if I top them it's a better use of the light
