Is this a dumb idea?

I am a complete n00b and this is my first grow... in attempt to bounce more light to lower fans that are getting less light now, I have cut this little paper light bounce around the stalk. Maybe I'm overthinking things... light used is a 400w mh.

That's not a bad idea at all. I do the same thing with my babies, only I use mylar. Be careful using paper. You dont want it to get soggy and start growing mold.

Is it a bad idea to switch back to CFLs once I've introduced the 400w lamp? I'm worried its too much light and my plant can't handle it yet... been experiencing some major drooping. Nothing too serious, but I wonder if CFL would be better for this stage....

root guards work very well, they are generally made of plastic, i think your plant is curling to conserve water from the amount of light it is getting. That plant will be fine with cfl's for a while.

I guess I was just hoping I could find the sweet spot, so my plant would be happy and not overheated or stressed... I guess I'll switch back to CFL if I don't see positive results by the end of the day.

whats the distance between the top of the plant and the light? and whats the size of the space. Definitely sounds like a bit too much light perhaps for the size and area.

The 400w was around 18 inches to the plant, the space is small, probably about 6 sq feet. I switched back to CFL and the lights around about 1-2 inches away.

In my veg room I also use 400w MH lamps. I usually throw clones in there a day or two after they root. The issue isn't too much light, it's usually too much heat. They like the light to stay about 2.5 feet away for a few days, then slowly lower it back to 18 inches. They might look pissed off for a day or two as they are adjusting, but that's completely normal. If you want your ladies to take off fast in veg, I would definitely use the MH lamp. A previous poster mentioned that roots need light/heat, that is incorrect. You did right to cover the top of the pot. Roots like heat, but NOT light. Letting those roots grow in the dark will make her happy.

good to know... I hate when people post comments arbitrarily with speculations... I figure the roots don't get much light anyways, what with them being underground, and the undergrowth wont complain to a little light bounces from below. At this point the fans are covering most of the dirt so I don't need to do this anymore, but good to know for the future
