hey all. i just went from cfl lighting to a 1000 watt hps light and i was wondering how far from the plants should i hang it? it produces an awful amount of heat. i have it about 3 to 4 feet above my 3 to 4 week old plants. is this too hi? the temp at this level is about 80 degrees. im wonderin if they will still stretch?my space is 10 ft by 12 ft by 7 ft hi.

You need better ventilation, then you can get it within 18 inches or so. Air cooled hood perhaps? Cheers.

For good results, not optimal, you are going to need 3 more lights in that space at least. 18" may cause some stretching, I typically hang a thermometer/humidity gauge at the top of my canopy, wallmart sells them for like 8-10 bucks. I keep the lights as close as possible without going over 85 degrees or so.

this light has a big tube around the bulb. is this to hook up some dryer venting and hook it to a fan? does it take away the heat closer to bulb?

It sounds like the tube would accept a duct for venting.

The idea is to bring cooler air to the lamp and simultaneously taking hot air from the lamp and displacing it. This lessens the "radiant" heat that is projected towards your plants from the light so you can get it closer to them.

For a smaller system you can get an inline 6" fan for about 30 bucks.

Make sure to keep them small or they will grow out of your light rays. You have a lot of room with not a lot of light.
